1) Does anything happen? (any message boxes?) 2) Tried waiting for a minute? 3) What is your UA string? (Help > About)

I can install extensions from the extensions mirror at http://www.extensionsmirror.nl but not from ftp.mozilla.org
I think i'm getting the same issue. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4: firefox-1.0.2-1.4.1 Click on extensions, install confirmation dialog box appears. Counts down, click install. New window appears, with no "contents" where I would expect an extension to appear. I am trying to install the firefox extension "scrapbook", although problem seems to affect all plugins. wmealing@gmail.com
Downloaded 1.04. Can no longer download extensions. Get "not a valid installation program" error, no matter what new extension I choose. Running Win XP Home.
(BFT June 28/05) Also reproduced under Firefox 1.0+ Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.8b2) Gecko/20050628 Firefox/1.0+ Bug 264653 also discusses this problem, albeit on Linux. Possible duplicate?
Upon further testing, I find that sometimes it works, sometimes it does not. Example: In addons.mozilla.org, attempt to download Outlook 2003 silver 1.0.1. No response when clicking install link. Clicking it again would bring up the download dialog box, which is not the expected behaviour. It asks if you want to run it (with whatever program is associated with .jar files), or save it to disk. Then attempted to download Classic Winstripe 1.1.3. This time an alert box appears, asking if you want to install this theme. This is the expected behaviour. Downloading and installation proceeds as normal. There doesn't appear to be any differences in the links between the two themes; both refer to jar files. Outlook silver: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/themes/outlook_2003_silver/outlook_2003_silver-1.0.1-fx.jar Classic Winstripe: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/themes/classic_winstripe/classic_winstripe-1.1.3-fx.jar
Another update. Clicking the install link for the Outlook 2003 Silver theme one more time finally downloaded and installed it. (This is still in the same Firefox test session as the past 2 comments; i.e. Firefox was not exited, restarted or crashed.) It appears that the jar file itself was downloaded, but the entry in the theme manager didn't appear until the successful attempt at installation.

I too am having this problem. I receive a message in a bar at the top that says "Software installation is currently disabled. Click Edit Options... to enable it and try again." I press EDIT OPTIONS and am taken to Firefox options. There is NO option for Software installation, I checked all tabs. The closest, the one that say Warn on install is NOT clicked on. NOTE: This is happening on a Macintosh OS-X system now, not on a PC

(In reply to comment #10) Owen - what you are describing is bug 310737 and not this bug. There are instructions in bug 310737 for you to re-enable installation.

If you have session saver installed, disable it, restart firefox and try it from there. All of my extension functions work when I have session saver turned off.
