Details

the pop3 spool file contains ca. 2800 emails. receiving the emails causes
thunderbird into a timeout - emails are copied at the mail-server into an 
.user.lock file. during that time thunderbird gives up. emails can be seamless
be downloaded with mozill or any other.
Probably DUP of Bug 270014.
See Bug 270014 and get POP3 protocol log.
If same as Bug 270014, try larger timeout value. 

thx - creating an user.js solved the problems of downloading 150 MB of eMails.

Since this is "Bugzilla for Mozilla famlily", "FIXED" means flaw of Mozilla
family  is found and the flaw is resolved by fix.
So "FIXED" is not proper for your case.
