found using 2005010405-trunk gtk2 bits (running on linux fc2). the following
smoketest fails:

http://testrunner.mozilla.org/test.cgi#22

when I click on the .xpi link (below), I get the software installation warning
dialog. then I click the Install button when it becomes active, but the file
smrtupdt.txt doesn't appear to get downloaded (installed) at all. I checked the
mozilla installation directory, my home dir, even my profile dir and desktop,
but it wasn't there.

http://www.mozilla.org/quality/smartupdate/xpis/acceptance/a_addfile_1.xpi

interestingly, this wasn't a problem with firefox, using 2005010307-trunk bits.
need to see if mozilla extensions are also affected --perhaps it might be only
this test...
hm, does anyone know of a Mozilla extension which is compatible with the 1.8 trunk?
I had checked the extensions on that page, but they all came up with an
incompatibility message. :-\
On the mac, I was able to install the xpi, but not the first time I clicked on
the link. The first time I clicked on the link I got the open/save file dialog,
not the dialog that allows me to install the xpi. The second time I did get that
dialog and was able to install the xpi. I did check the Mozilla install
directory and the file is present.
out of curiosity, I checked a gtk1 (installer build from 20050102-trunk), and
this problem also occurs there.
addenda:

- forgot to note that in the failure case I don't the "file successfully
installed" dialog.

- this works with mozilla 1.7.5 (gtk1 installer).
> Is this bug 272764?

the odd thing is that tracy wasn't able to repro this on Windows, and marcia was
able to eventually get the file installed on Mac...
although if fixing bug 272764 ends up fixing this issue, that'd be dandy. :)
yep, looks like the fix for 272764 fixed this.
