Saferfox Xpanded is a beautiful theme but like many other themes the toolbar
drop down buttons do not work. I believe the problem may be that theme authors
are unaware of the need and method to implement this functionality.

For an example of how to duplicate this bug install Yahoo Companion for Mozilla
(http://companion.mozdev.org/) and then install the the Saferfox theme
(http://www.mankin-studio.com/downloads.html). None of the buttons which have
both a click function as well as a menu or dropdown function display the drop
down icon and the drop down functionality is completely missing.

For an example of what I assume is the correct behavior install the Silver Skin
theme
(https://addons.update.mozilla.org/themes/moreinfo.php?application=firefox&version=1.0&os=Windows&id=101)
to see the buttons displayed with the drop down icon which also supports the
additional functionality.
yes but that isa a bug in the theme and not Firefox -> invalid
You should send a mail to the theme author

I have sent the theme's author a bug report with a jpg showing a different theme
where the button & dropdown display properly. I included the jpg because there
is no sign at all on the author's web page that he speaks or reads english and I
cannot write in french. I posted this as a Firefox/Mozilla issue because it is
a common problem in themes and if there is an authoring tool or documented
standard then underlying problem may be in the tool or documentation. The other
reason I posted this to Firefox is that perhaps the theme should NOT be able to
provide the alternate behavior and reduced functionality.
