I agree that many people want to surf with the find bar open, however for those wanting to close it, having to press ctrl-f then reach up for the escape key is really quite a hassle. I think that using ctrl-shift-f to close the find bar if it is open (regardless of whether it has focus, and only to close it, not open it) solves the usability issue for people like me who find the current method to close the find toolbar clunky and unintuitive. This also doesn't affect those who surf with the find toolbar open most of the time.

This would be a partial solution at best, since GTK2 eats that keybinding. (Ctrl-Shift 0-9,A-F are used to enter hex data for Unicode characters) As a note, if you use the option for find as you type, the bar closes automatically after a few seconds.
