I have Firefox as my default browser and it opens in it. Check that thunderbird is not opening your default browser.
I am trying to use Thunderbird in a mixed IE/Outlook, Mozilla/Thunderbird environment and Thunderbird Help takes over an existing IE window. I find this very annoying. Thunderbird should open a new Mozilla window when Help is invoked and not take over any existing browser window. Opening a new window instead of taking over an existing one is just common sense.

Greetings from Victoria, BC. Unfortunately, I have to use IE (Version 7) to access the BC Government Exchange-based email system. When both Firefox and IE are active on my PC (Windows XP SP2) and I click on a URL within Thunderbird, including Help, another tab opens in IE even though Firefox is the default browser. When IE is not active, the URL opens in a new tab in Firefox. IE tells me it is not the default browser (Tools, Internet Options, Programs), yet Thunderbird still uses it even when Firefox is open. Help!!

Solved the problem. Used Windows XP "Set Program Access and Defaults" icon to switch off "Enable access to this program" for Internet Explorer. Even though Firefox was designated the default browser, Windows XP did not appear to acknowledge the fact and continued to use IE. Now all links from Thunderbird go to Firefox, finally.
