While importing Microsoft Outlook mail to Thunderbird 1.0(20041260), Thunderbird crashes. I have almost 257 MB in my PST. I am unable to import from Microsoft Outlook. I wanted to evaluate Thunderbird as an alternative for Microsoft Outlook. This is really blocking the migration of Outlook users to Thunderbird.
Which Outlook version? Please add a comment and change the summary. When does Thunderbird crash? Can you provide Talkback IDs/crash reports?

The version of outlook is Microsoft Outlook 2000. 9.0.0.2711. There are no Crash reports. It just hangs for half an hour and becomes unreponsive. In the task bar,the status is listed as Not Responding. Also,the pst size is 257 MB. There are no crash reports or talkback Ids. How can i get them ?

if it doesn't crash, there won't be a talkback incident. Short of getting me a copy of your pst file, which folks are understandably reluctant to do :-), the next best thing might be to turn on logging and see if it tells us anything useful. If you follow the instructions below, but replace "IMAP" with "IMPORT", it will generate a log that you can e-mail me or attach here, and we'll see if there's anything interesting in it. http://www.mozilla.org/quality/mailnews/mail-troubleshoot.html#imap

I should add, you can load the log file into a browser while logging is being done, and press reload to get the latest info - so you can run import until it hangs and it seems that no more info is getting added to the log file.

2/17/05 -- I have also experienced reproduceable crashes of Thunderbird v1.0 when I ask it to import
email from Outlook 2000 under Win2K-SP4. My PST email folder is 115megs, gives Outlook no
problems and has been scanned by MS ScanPST.exe utility for errors (none found).
Thunderbird crashes ("error log file being generated") at the same place each time; about 20% thru the
import process. I experience the same crash in Mozilla "email/News" using the latest binary build (2/
16/05). Set debug level = 5 and have attached my log file. On one test run the log file had a problem
with one of the PST subfolders so I removed the contents of the folder and tried another Mozilla email
import. This time the new logfile stopped a couple PST subfolders later after the subsequent Mozilla
crash.
Unfortunately if I can not get Thunderbird to import my email I will have to stick with Outlook - ugh.

Second logfile generated by Mozilla before it crashed importing Outlook 2000 PST file.
TB hang here while trying to import Outlook 2003SP1 folders. the Outlook Folders are 887 MB large and it went through some of those folders. Unfortunatly Talkback didnt kick in, so all i have is the Crash Log that WinXP SP2 generated. (i dont know if this file is of any use to you, but i'll attach it) this crash can be reproduced here. (it happened at least two times before)
forgot to add something: this happend when i click on the Cancel button. (TB didnt do anything anymore at this point, no HD activity, no CPU usage)

tried it again, same result TB doesnt crash, but it doesnt do anything. (no Harddisk acrivity, no CPU usage) Testet with 1.5Beta 1, Outlook 2003 SP2

a view more: TB10391357E, TB10391212X, TB10391139H, TB10391062W, TB10390990Z, TB10390638M, TB10390467Y, TB10390292E TB just gets a view mails, but not all of them. There are allways a view 1000 Mails left that are not migrated.

no idea, if this is somehow related, but i have enabled the No Execute (NX) Option on WinXP SP2 & Athlon 64. (and some Apps have problems with this) I noticed something else after the crash: If Outlook 2003SP2 was running during the crash it couldnt access the Mail Folders anymore and had to be restarted. btw: the last TalkBack i got until i could finish migrating the Mails: TB10392054H

It is now MARCH 2006 and I don't see any recent activity on this problem - and no real solution. I am not a programmer, so many of these posts are thoroughly confusing. I am trying to switch to Thunderbird because I've been having multiple problems with Outlook and wish to ditch it altogether. But if I cannot even finish importing, what's the point?? I am running WinXPSP2 with Outlook 2003 and Firefox 1.5.0.1 and my Outlook has a LOT of e-mail and quite a few folders. Is this just a matter of Thunderbird not being able to handle what Outlook can.....?? HELP!

With Thunderbird 1.5 I had Outlook 9.0.0.2711 and with 9.0.0.6627 (that is SP3 after upgrading Outlook) I was having the same problem. I do not know how to see the crashlog but it starts the import fine and about halfway through it (Thunderbird) just blips out of existance. I will try to get a debg log with the nightly builds.

I also have the same problem (TB hanging during migration from Outlook 2002 SP3 - Windows XP SP1 + patches). I am not sure, but maybe these .pst were created using Outlook 2000, then used by Outlook 2002. Also, it occurs for large databases (thousands of messages in a lot of folders). ------- I have found a workaround, but it needs workspace : First, export messages from Outlook 200x to Outlook Express, then import to TB. But I cannot import preferences.

Was tested on a new machine (laptop Windows 2000 Pro, with TB 1.5.0.7 previously installed) I am pleased to annouce you that it seems corrected by this version. I have imported the emails included in a big OutLook database, without any problem. Also, we have the strange following behaviour: -> Started from an empty ThunderBird folder/database, -> Imported email messages, -> Selected a sub-folder to check the content. Result: => Nothing was displayed. -> Exited ThunderBird, then re-entered, -> Selected again the same sub-folder. Result: => Everything was OK. Also, OutLook Preferences still cannot be imported. So, quite a good job for this one. Need to be confirmed by other users, but I think it can be closed. Thanks, Jean-Dominique.
