Hello, Thunderbird often truncates the quoted text in reply. This semes to happen more as the thread gets longer, especially on digest mailing lists. I can see the entire email when reading, but when I try to reply only a limited amount of the original message is quoted. Email me if you want some examples (I don't want to post my emails here). Thanks, Charles
I also have noticed this and it is VERY annoying. If you are replying to the 8th (arbitrary #) posting in a list digest, to actually reply to that specific post, you have to copy and paste from the original e-mail. This is really the only beef I have with Thunderbird. For me, everything else seems fine. However, this is annoying enough that I think the priority should be raised from "normal".
This is an automated message, with ID "auto-resolve01". This bug has had no comments for a long time. Statistically, we have found that bug reports that have not been confirmed by a second user after three months are highly unlikely to be the source of a fix to the code. While your input is very important to us, our resources are limited and so we are asking for your help in focussing our efforts. If you can still reproduce this problem in the latest version of the product (see below for how to obtain a copy) or, for feature requests, if it's not present in the latest version and you still believe we should implement it, please visit the URL of this bug (given at the top of this mail) and add a comment to that effect, giving more reproduction information if you have it. If it is not a problem any longer, you need take no action. If this bug is not changed in any way in the next two weeks, it will be automatically resolved. Thank you for your help in this matter. The latest beta releases can be obtained from: Firefox: http://www.mozilla.org/projects/firefox/ Thunderbird: http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird/releases/1.5beta1.html Seamonkey: http://www.mozilla.org/projects/seamonkey/
I can reproduce this with the latest version of Thunderbird, but not with any consistency. It appears to be dependent on what is in the message when you hit reply - for instance if part of the message is signed with a gpg signature. As far as I'm concerned, you can close it and if I need to I'll use a work around. I'd rather you work on bugs that are more important. Regards, Colleen
Can anyone attach a sample message (before truncation) here? Export it as eml. Isn't the message truncated after the first signature ('--' on line alone)?
See my comments in the main bug post
(In reply to comment #4) > Can anyone attach a sample message (before truncation) here? Export it as eml. > Isn't the message truncated after the first signature ('--' on line alone)? > As requested I have attached a message in eml format prior to trucation. Before doing this, I did a test. The orginial message is a list digest with 8 posts. The reply picked up 3 of the messages and trucated the remainder. Regards, Colleen
It looks I was right. The message was cut at this point: -- Regards, Ernie 100% Microsoft and Intel free 22:23:32 up 6 days, 11:28, 3 users, load average: 0.25, 0.88, 0.91 Linux 2.6.14-gentoo-r42.6.14-r-4_new i686 AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2400+ The '-- ' separator is for signature. This bug seems to be a duplicate, please confirm it is the same as bug 201581 or bug 54570.

I've tried this using multiple digest e-mails as a basis. It is stated in bug #201581 that "Bug #54570 has been marked as a duplicate of 201581". I suppose this issue in this bug (27422) is somewhat the same as 210581 except that that seems to state in the first post that it happens when the mail is from an "improper" MUA. That isn't true because the digests that I receive are only Linux related and no one on those lists used Outlook. They would use either Mozilla Mail, Thunderbird or perhaps kmail. And the signature has caused truncation following a signature from a user that I know uses Firefox or Mozilla. Regards, Colleen
That duplication seems to be revoked, because both bugs are in the NEW state. In bug 54570, starting at comment #41, you can see why even "proper" MUAs can have this problem. The comments specifically mention digesting software. There seems to be no universal solution. Only to make an option to not strip signatures, as in bug 201581.

Now if only the original reporter would wake up to tell us if he sees the same problem.
Yes, I see the same problem -- digest messages are truncated at signatures starting with "--". Charles
Aceman, please don't confirm a bug (UNCO->NEW) if you're adding 'DUPEME'. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 201581 ***
