IHMO the Junk Button found in the Main Mail (not Message View) Window, as it is
implemented today, is not very useful.

The only way to be alerted about that a particular message has been classified
as junk is today ( Mozilla 1.7.5 ) to display the Junk Status column in the
Messages View of Main Mail Window.

The Junk State Icons in the Junk Status column are clickable in order to toggle
the junk state i.e. "mark as junk/mark as not junk", and this is the method that
I use for changing the junk status of messages manually.

The Junk Mail Button found in the toolbar of the Main Mail Window, which just
toggles the junk state of the selected message and therefore is redundant,
is never used by me (due to the large mouse movement required after selecting
the message), and I thus, of course, could decide to make it invisible.

Allowing the Junk Mail Button to be configurable, it could become quite useful.

For example; if I would be allowed to configure it to delete all
messages marked as junk, in the current mail folder, it would certainly justify
larger mouse movements (particularly in contrast to in contrast to how to
accomplish this today i.e. via 'Tools -> Delete Mail Marked as Junk in Folder');
in this case the Junk Button, of course, should be grouped separately (delimited
by a vertical separator line) in the toolbar, to distinguish it from the Delete
Button and other buttons which only operate on the currently selected message.

Others, at least from reading bugzilla reports, might want to use the button to
launch the Junk Mail Controls Window ('Tools -> Junk Mail Controls...'), or to
explicitly run the Junk Mail Filters or Junk Mail Controls on Folder etc.

Allowing to re-configure the button, at least via non-GUI preferences, to work
as either 'Toggle Junk Status' or 'Delete Mail Marked as Junk in Folder' would
be a great usability improvement.

Allowing this to be configured via Junk Mail Controls would be even greater.

Please note though that the Junk Mail Button found in the Message Window should
retain it's current functionality as it, IMHO, makes perfectly sense to work
just the way it does today there.

Personally I don't mind that the graphical representation is still the same,
as long as the Tool Tip reflects the button's current configuration/use.

Best Regards

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open Main Message Window (w/ Junk Mail Button visible).
2. Pressing the Junk Mail Button (after explicitly configured to do so)
should delete all messages marked as junk in the currently selected folder.

Actual Results:
The currently selected message's junk status is toggled.

This bug has had no comments for a long time. Statistically, we have found that
bug reports that have not been confirmed by a second user after three months are
highly unlikely to be the source of a fix to the code.

While your input is very important to us, our resources are limited and so we
are asking for your help in focussing our efforts. If you can still reproduce
this problem in the latest version of the product (see below for how to obtain a
copy) or, for feature requests, if it's not present in the latest version and
you still believe we should implement it, please visit the URL of this bug
(given at the top of this mail) and add a comment to that effect, giving more
reproduction information if you have it.

If it is not a problem any longer, you need take no action. If this bug is not
changed in any way in the next two weeks, it will be automatically resolved.
Thank you for your help in this matter.

This feature I miss several times every day, and I'd be surprised if I would be
the only one. But I guess that the interest in Bug 248571 should count in favor
for this one too, as this is generalization of Bug 248571.
