User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; nb-NO; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20041108 Firefox/1.0
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; nb-NO; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20041108 Firefox/1.0
Temporary files for downloads appear on the Desktop, even if the user preference
says to save the file somewhere else. The files appear with weird filenames like
"xe13av8e.exe" and might take the form of an *Excel icon*. After the download is
complete, the file disappears from the desktop
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Make sure *Safari*'s download location is set to the Desktop (default)
2. Download and run latest Firefox nightly build
3. Create a new profile
4. Go to Preferences->Download and select any other location than Desktop
5. Go to http://www.skype.com/products/skype/macosx/ or www.getfirefox.com and
start a download of any binary file.
6. Watch the desktop
Actual Results:
If downloading a binary file, like Skype, an icon "xe13av8e.exe" appears on the
desktop, possibly with an Excel icon. The extensions seems to relate to the MIME
type sent, so downloads from getfirefox will get .gz and a almost-appropriate
.gz-icon.
The desktop icon will disappear once the download has completed, as the file is
probably moved and renamed to the correct location. The final download appears
where it should.
Expected Results:
The temporary file should not be visible to the user, and NOT at the Desktop.
(and NOT whatever default set in SAFARI - why should people have to go to Safari
to set a default that Firefox gives the impression of supporting?)
The file should be downloaded directly to the specified location, this is
specially important for files going to "slow" external medias.
(It's not fun to wait for this move after the download is actually complete - I
think the only other browser that does this is IE - but IE stores the temps in
"Temporary items" - not the Desktop!)
The filename and extension should be as specified by the HTTP headers, not
chosen at will by the browser. The icon should NOT NOT NOT be an Excel icon.
To "hide" the file while downloading, try appending a "." first in the name.
I find it amusing that the Excel icon appears.. very open source.

This is an automated message, with ID "auto-resolve01".
This bug has had no comments for a long time. Statistically, we have found that
bug reports that have not been confirmed by a second user after three months are
highly unlikely to be the source of a fix to the code.
While your input is very important to us, our resources are limited and so we
are asking for your help in focussing our efforts. If you can still reproduce
this problem in the latest version of the product (see below for how to obtain a
copy) or, for feature requests, if it's not present in the latest version and
you still believe we should implement it, please visit the URL of this bug
(given at the top of this mail) and add a comment to that effect, giving more
reproduction information if you have it.
If it is not a problem any longer, you need take no action. If this bug is not
changed in any way in the next two weeks, it will be automatically resolved.
