(Whiteboard: [needs protocol log] closeme 2009-06-18)
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20041107 Firefox/1.0 Build Identifier: Thunderbird version 1.0 (20041206) I have Yahoo Mail Plus, which is a premium Yahoo Mail account that provides POP3 capability. I can download messages from it without a problem, using the POP3 server pop.mail.yahoo.com, port 110 and my user name; I was prompted the first time for my password, entered it, and now it works without prompting. When I set it as my only outgoing server, using the server name smtp.mail.yahoo.com, port 25, user name and password checked, and "No" for "Use Secure connection," if I try to send an e-mail it tries to connect , then times out and I get a message, "Sending of Message failed. The message could not be sent because connecting to SMTP server smtp.mail.yahoo.com failed. The server may be unavailable or is refusing SMTP connections." I am able to use these settings in Outlook. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Subscribe to Yahoo Mail Plus. 2. Set up Outgoing server as per above (server smtp.mail.yahoo.com, port 25, use name and password, fill in user name, do not use secure connection. 3. Compose e-mail. 4. Click on "Send." Actual Results: Send process times out and I get a message, "Sending of Message failed. The message could not be sent because connecting to SMTP server smtp.mail.yahoo.com failed. The server may be unavailable or is refusing SMTP connections." I am able to use these settings in Outlook. Expected Results: Sent the message. I see lots of sendiing problems in existing bug reports, none of which are solved.
I use Yahoo Mail Plus daily with Thunderbird. I have used it and Mozilla for years with no problems of this type although I do vaguely remember problems setting things up in the very very beginning. My server settings are: smtp.mail.yahoo.com, port 25 (same) "username and password" checked (same) "User Name:" has my yahoo ID entered, ie my yahoo email address without the @yahoo.com (You didn't mention this, maybe this is the problem?? That'd be my first guess.) has either "No" or "TLS, if available" checked (works either way, same) I would note that the first time I send an email after the application starts, I am prompted to enter a password (my Yahoo POP/SMTP password). (I dunno if you get that?) I enter my Yahoo password by hand for both POP and SMTP. If none of the above explains what's happening to you, I would doublecheck your firewall settings for Thunderbird (if you have firewall software running on your PC.) I find I sometimes mis-set those.

I have tried different settings as well, such as a different port mentioned on Yahoo, but always without results. I doubt it could be firewall/network/mail server related, because I CAN send mails using EUDORA on the same computer on the same network. So, unless TB uses different ports etc. or there is some other thing about firewalls I dont know about, then it should work.. but it dont. Sending messages is also flaky, with timeouts even before it has started (even though my timeout is set to 60 seconds), although that is for a different bug listing.

If you are using Tb 1.5 and '60 sec" means mailnews.tcptimeout=60(default), and if timeout during sending is involved in your problem, see Bug 325649. Bug 325649 is smtp.mail.yahoo.com case reported to Bugzilla Japan, and timeout in very short period occurs only when large mail. But sending by other mailers such as MS Outlook Express doesn't have timeout problem, as you and bug opener say. Further, this timeout in very short period occurs not only when mailnews.tcptimeout=600 but also when mailnews.tcptimeout=60000(=60*1000), not only when Tb 1.5 but also when Tb 1.0.7. So our case and your case look to be similar cases. (Please note that we can not identify yahoo server's problem or Tb's problem yet.) Kjell, get NSPR log(SMTP:5,nsSocketTransport:5), and get NSPR log with timestamp using DebugView(mentioned by Bug 86396 comment #6) if MS Win. See following sites for NSPR log. http://www.mozilla.org/quality/mailnews/mail-troubleshoot.html#smtp http://www.mozilla.org/projects/netlib/http/http-debugging.html (In reply to comment #0) Since mailnews.tcptimeout is introduced by Tb 1.5, there is no relation to mailnews.tcptimeout if Tb 1.0.x. But, as I said in above, our timeout occurs when Tb 1.0.7 too. So it looks that your case and our case are similar situation. mhimeles@yahoo.com, do you still have problem? Do you have problem even when Tb 1.5? If yes, get NSPR log with timestamp using DebugView.

Nothing consistent except the error message! I have checked all my settings and all are OK...I'm confused...is there a "fix" for this?
