I have just been given a new monitor (Apple Studio Display flat-panel), and ever since noticed a strange visual glitch with the toolbar buttons. I don't see why the change of monitor should have led to this, but if it had been happening all along I'm sure I would have noticed it. Buttons that are enabled, when the mouse isn't hovering over them, look fine. But when I move the mouse over a button, the right-hand half of the button image disappears. Some of the buttons (Back and Forward) but not others (Stop and most of the buttons in MailNews) are also cut off when greyed out. Moreover, the whole image appears when I am actually pressing the button. The bug doesn't affect personal toolbar links, the little buttons on the status bar for switching between bits of Mozilla, or any of the buttons in Composer. It is happening only with the Classic theme.
This shows what happens when I move the mouse over the Reload button.
I thought that the user-agent was automatically added to the bug report even when not using Bugzilla Helper. But apparently not. Well, here it is: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; en-US; rv:1.8b) Gecko/20050119
Stewart, what screen color depth is your monitor set to (Finder system prefs --> Hardware --> Monitors: choose between millions, thousands or 256 )? What happens if you change the settings?
It was set to thousands. The same happens if I change it to 256, but on millions the problem disappears. I also tried playing about with the resolution, which didn't make a difference.
Summary: Toolbar button images truncated during mouseover and when greyed out → Toolbar button images truncated during mouseover and when greyed out (if colour depth less than millions)
This is a Quickdraw API issue (I reported exactly the same issue as you in bug 254495). Fixing bug 245407 (move to Quartz APIs) should cure the problem. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 245407 ***

The icons in message prompts screw up in a different way. Is this part of the same issue?
