So you have quicktime 6.5.2 installed and its listed in about:plugins?
I dont know if this is relevant, i dont have the problem that the plugin finder pop up, but i do have Quicktime 6.5.2, but checking about:plugins says i have 6.5.1
i have it too =(
What the heck are we supposed to do then please? it's really annoying. I only downloaded it to view loads of pages with, but although I have it, it's not working with Firefox..
again - does loading about:config in the url bar show quicktime?
Yeah, I've been having the same problem. I've uninstalled quicktime and reinstalled it a few times and it hasn't made much of a difference. Won't play .asf files in the background like IE will.
(In reply to comment #6) > Yeah, I've been having the same problem. I've uninstalled quicktime and > reinstalled it a few times and it hasn't made much of a difference. Also, please provide a sample URL that doesn't work, else this bug is invalid.
http://cyberhymnal.org/htm/b/t/btmvison.htm The problem is very common and very annoying.
I'm having the same problem. FireFox wants to use QuickTime to view an embedded MP3 file at http://www.shelteringwings.com/ (This is my personal site, I can assure the embed code WON'T be changed for a long time) I have just done a fresh QT install of version 6.5.2 <-- Begin copy of about:plugins --> QuickTime Plug-in 6.5.1 File name: npqtplugin2.dll The QuickTime Plugin allows you to view a wide variety of multimedia content in Web pages. Confirming based on dupes. To sum up, i do have 6.5.2 installed, but about:plugins say 6.5.1, and when i visit the url in commment 9 it doesnt recognize quicktime and ask me to install 6.5.1

Flags: blocking-aviary1.1?
If i have 6.5.1 installed, the site works fine. Upgrading to 6.5.2 via apple.com, restarting firefox and then loading the site works still. Uninstalled Quicktime, verified the pfs asked me to install quicktime. Installed 6.5.2 via apple.com, went to the site, wav plays fine. Note that it does call itself 6.5.1 still, so I guess they forgot to update the plugin version. Be sure that quicktime is set to play wavs
Very odd, this is wfm now on those links (including the urls in the dupes). Have 6.5.2 installed but about:plugins show 6.5.1 I think I could reproduce on my work computer. Will give it a try tomorrow.

(In reply to comment #14) > Be sure that quicktime is set to play wavs Yeah, the difference was that my work computer did not have wav set to be played by quicktime. Also mp3 are set to be played at home. Does this make this bug invalid? How come WMP is not used if its set to play wavs and mp3:s?
(In reply to comment #17) > (In reply to comment #14) > > Be sure that quicktime is set to play wavs > > Yeah, the difference was that my work computer did not have wav set to be played > by quicktime. Also mp3 are set to be played at home. > > Does this make this bug invalid? How come WMP is not used if its set to play > wavs and mp3:s? If you go to about:plugins, you will see that WMP doesn't register those mimetypes/extensions.

My sons site works now. His had .mp3 that wouldn't play. http://home.earthlink.net/~neomage84/ It was too late to try just resetting the prefs in qt and I also wonder why the default player didn't work. I'm new to this site and not savy on programming or much of anything when it comes to computers. Could there be a problem due to Apple splitting their audio out to itunes have anything to do with it? in about:plugins I now have 7 entries under Plugin 6.5.1 instead of the 2 I had before the reinstall
The problem, for me at least, is that I prefer to use WMP for audio files (.wav, .midi, .mp3, etc.) and I can do that now and IE still plays MIDIs, WAVs and MP3s automatically. Why can't Firefox?
As for 6 entires - seems the new QT puts in 6 .dlls (In reply to comment #20) > The problem, for me at least, is that I prefer to use WMP for audio files > (.wav, .midi, .mp3, etc.) and I can do that now and IE still plays MIDIs, WAVs > and MP3s automatically. Why can't Firefox? WMP's plugin needs to tell us what files it can handle, and it doesn't register for those. We do as we are told.
There is a lot of people who keeps telling us that just make Quicktime play the files by default, and it'll work. A) Not everyone what to use Quicktime by default. When not using an embeded website, and playing audio/video, we would like to use programs like Real Player, WinAmp, or Windows Media Player. B) I don't think making it compatible should be that difficult, because previous Quicktime versions worked with Firefox. C) IE can do it, why can't firefox?

B) I > don't think making it compatible should be that difficult, because previous > Quicktime versions worked with Firefox. C) IE can do it, why can't firefox? The theoretical "plugin manager", which no one is working on, would in theory allow people to be able to make additions/changes to the registeres mimetypes. But that is another story.

Two sites which don't work: - http://stabbing.pokelondon.com/ - http://q102philly.com/ver2/citms/citms.html Also, in the plugin finder, the 'manual install' button goes to a page which doesn't exist on apple.com, and the 'finish' button doesn't work (it doesn't close the window). Also, I have quicktime 6.5.2 installed with all plugins installed, yet it is asking for quicktime 6.5.1 to be installed (and then won't install it). A lot of people have this problem - doing a search on google brought up a lot of message board posts - and so this bug really needs to be fixed immediately.
Both urls work fine for me with quicktime installed (no manual changes). Did you configure quicktime in any way?
No I haven't configured Quicktime in any way. I've tried the tests at http://www.student.oulu.fi/%7esairwas/object-test/video/ and found that MOV files will be played but not AVI or MPG.
(In reply to comment #27) > No I haven't configured Quicktime in any way. > > I've tried the tests at http://www.student.oulu.fi/%7esairwas/object-test/video/ > and found that MOV files will be played but not AVI or MPG. So you don't have an avi or mpg registering plugin. I still fail to see why this is Mozilla's issue?
> > So you don't have an avi or mpg registering plugin. I still fail to see why > this is Mozilla's issue? I fixed this problem by changing the mime type settings in Quicktime. However, this is still a Mozilla issue because FireFox wanted me to download Quicktime, even though I already had it installed. Why didn't FireFox detect that Quicktime was installed? Here is what should happen: - Firefox detects that there isn't a plugin for avi or mpg files (because the Quicktime mime settings haven't been configured). It knows that Quicktime is needed, however, it should already have detected that the Quicktime plugin is installed (and handling other file types such as 'mov'), therefore it should simply tell the user to change their mime settings in Quicktime, and perhaps even open this window for the user. - Also, FireFox shouldn't be linking to pages which don't exist on apple.com . And the 'Finish' button doesn't work either. So this is a Mozilla issue.

All we do is provide the user a plugin that matches the needed mimetype. Quicktime by default does .mov, and if the website needs it, we offer it. Trying to see if quicktime is installed and all is complex and will just confuse the user. The finish button is fixed in 1.1 already. Filed bug 297228 for the url being invalid

I think the user is already confused though, because Firefox is telling them that Quicktime isn't installed when it is. That shouldn't be happening.
It should never happen - quicktime will always register .mov if it is installed.
The problem is not .mov - this was registered. The problem is .avi and .mpg
(In reply to comment #33) > The problem is not .mov - this was registered. The problem is .avi and .mpg Firefox suggests to install quicktime for .avi and .mpg? I don't see that in the url you gave me.
(In reply to comment #34) > (In reply to comment #33) > > The problem is not .mov - this was registered. The problem is .avi and .mpg > > Firefox suggests to install quicktime for .avi and .mpg? I don't see that in > the url you gave me. > > In http://stabbing.pokelondon.com/ we have: <embed src="uktvstabbinng.mpg" width="288" height="260" class="movie"></embed> And in http://www.student.oulu.fi/%7esairwas/object-test/video/ I referred to the AVI and MPG test pages ("I've tried the tests at http://www.student.oulu.fi/%7esairwas/object-test/video/ and found that MOV files will be played but not AVI or MPG.") So Firefox does suggest to install Quicktime for AVI and MPG. Thanks for all your help :-)
For all the problems there are with Internet Explorer, it still can handle playing .avi and .mpg files even if they are not set up to play with Quicktime. Until such time as Firefox can also do this, I see no alternative but to continue to use IE. I reserve the right to be able to use Windows Media player to play these files on my PC and also play music on websites.
(In reply to comment #36) > For all the problems there are with Internet Explorer, it still can handle > playing .avi and .mpg files even if they are not set up to play with Quicktime. > Until such time as Firefox can also do this, I see no alternative but to > continue to use IE. But it doesn't in the sense that Firefox wants to play avi and mpg files with Quicktime, not WMP, and it is telling users that they don't have Quicktime installed when in fact they do.
(In reply to comment #38) > But it doesn't in the sense that Firefox wants to play avi and mpg files with > Quicktime, not WMP, and it is telling users that they don't have Quicktime > installed when in fact they do. First of all, it is the plugin that tells Firefox what files it can play. By default, quicktime only registers for mov. I still have yet to see a testcase showing Firefox telling the user to get Quicktime for avi/mpg.
> I still have yet to see a testcase showing Firefox telling the user to get > Quicktime for avi/mpg. I can assure you that on all the sites I went on (ie. which had avi/mpg embedded), I was asked to install Quicktime. Had that not happened, I would not be commenting on this bug here. I will attach a screenshot.
(In reply to comment #41) > Created an attachment (id=185819) [edit] > Quicktime Firefox bug screenshot > Does disabling adblock fix the issue? Indeed, mpg does get registered by quicktime. COuld be that adblock is messing things up.
So we do default to useing quicktime to mpg, and your concern is that you want to use windows media player?
This still happens with Adblock not installed. My concern is that Firefox is telling me to install Quicktime when it's already installed. This shouldn't be happening, and it confuses the user.
uninstalled and reinstalled quicktime, going to the page works fine and doesn't ask me to install any plugin.
(In reply to comment #43 and 44) I just disable Adblock by going to Tools>AdBlock>Preferences and everything worked like a charm. Even reenabling has worked. I'm going to try restarting Firefox now.
(In reply to comment #46) > (In reply to comment #43 and 44) > > I just disable Adblock by going to Tools>AdBlock>Preferences > > and everything worked like a charm. Even reenabling has worked. I'm going to try > restarting Firefox now. This did not happen for me (see second screenshot) (In reply to comment #45) > uninstalled and reinstalled quicktime, going to the page works fine and doesn't > ask me to install any plugin. This is because the mime settings for quicktime have changed. If quicktime is not set up to play avi/mpg files, firefox thinks it isn't installed.
(In reply to comment #47) > (In reply to comment #46) > > (In reply to comment #43 and 44) > > > > I just disable Adblock by going to Tools>AdBlock>Preferences > > > > and everything worked like a charm. If quicktime is > not set up to play avi/mpg files, firefox thinks it isn't installed. If you manually changed it, then yes.
> If you manually changed it, then yes. This is absolutely ridiculous. I have never touched my Quicktime settings. I don't even use Quicktime. As far as I'm concerned, it's some random piece of software from Apple that asks me to buy the 'Pro version' whenever it's started, and the only time I ever come into contact with it is when Firefox tells me I need to install it, even though it's already installed. Which is completely confusing me and completely confusing other people. Why is Firefox telling me to install Quicktime when it's already installed? This shouldn't be happening.
Alright the real fix. I just checked something. If you goto Control Panel and QuickTime Then the dropdown menu goto browser plug-in. Click MIME setting (This will not change your MIME setting for the rest of the computer, only for your default Browser (that'll be firefox)) Make sure MPG, AVI, and MIDI and what ever else you can't play is checked. Then it all works just fine. And you'll still use WINAMP, WMP, BS Player or what ever else you use when not online. Trust me it works. Also for sites that gives you the option of QuickTime or WMP, WMP will still work. I just tested it.

But I still don't think Firefox should be telling users to install Quicktime when it's already installed.
Firefox appearantly doesn't look for QuickTime on your PC, it looks for a plugin that can play that format on your plugin folder. Not finding one, it then tells you you need a new plugin. Clicking on the button takes you to a server where the server that's what you need. Even though you already have it. THe problem is that during QuickTime 6.2 install, a lot of the MIMEs were disabled. You'll need to reenable it manually unfortunately. Thus, you enable it you'll have some more plugin files: npqtplugin.dll npqtplugin2.dll npqtplugin3.dll ... npqtplugin9.dll upto 9 of then plus nsIQTScriptablePlugin.xpt QuickTimePlugin.class You'll only need about 6-7 to play mp3, wav, mov, mpg, avi, and midi files. 8 and 9 are annoy cuz they are actually for most basic pic files that Firefox can open, and flash (also openable by firefox with the flash plugins). I have no problem with this when I use the Quicktime Alterative
This "bug" is a annoying reset of defaults done by Apple when they updated. Its not a bug, you have to change the Quicktime Browser specific MIMEs. Like I said earlier it doesn't affect system global MIMEs, only the Broswers.
