User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.8a6) Gecko/20050111
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.8a6) Gecko/20050111

New mail appears in boldface, but when cursor arrives on it (for example, when a
previous mail is deleted) the font changes to normal face even if the mail is
not opened. Cannot follow which mails are opened and which not.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. click once any unopened mail
2. or delete any mail, the next mail will appear as opened, even if it was not
opened
3.

Actual Results:
The boldface (indicating not read) switches to normal face (indicating read mail)

Expected Results:
Switch to normal face from boldface only when the mail is actually opened (after
a double click)
The behavior you're seeing should only occur if you've got the message pane
(preview) open; if you close that pane, the message status should not change
when selected.

There is a feature already existing to set a time interval to wait before
marking the message read when in the preview window; the patch for bug 231428
has added UI for that in current 1.8b builds, altho you can set the preferences
yourself in about:config:
  mailnews.mark_message_read.delay set to True
mailnews.mark_message_read.delay.interval set to # seconds to wait
