Cannot follow which mails are opened and which not. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. click once any unopened mail 2. or delete any mail, the next mail will appear as opened, even if it was not opened 3. The behavior you're seeing should only occur if you've got the message pane (preview) open; if you close that pane, the message status should not change when selected. There is a feature already existing to set a time interval to wait before marking the message read when in the preview window; the patch for bug 231428 has added UI for that in current 1.8b builds, altho you can set the preferences yourself in about:config: mailnews.mark_message_read.delay set to True mailnews.mark_message_read.delay.interval set to # seconds to wait If this solves your problem, please mark this bug as a duplicate of bug 75866.
