User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; sv-SE; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20041217
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; sv-SE; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/????????

When I click the Mozilla-icon in WinXP SP2 nothing happends except for a brief
(a couple of seconds) period of CPU-activity. No error-dialogs - nothing.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Install and reinstall Mozilla as admin as many times as you wish. You can even
delete the Mozilla.org-folder.
2. Attempt to start Mozilla as privileged user. Nothing happends.
3.

Actual Results:
Nothing happends

Expected Results:
Mozilla starts

The OS is WinXP SP2 with the latest security-updates installed (20050121). The
setting is a corporate environment so the software is installed as local admin
while the user runs it as a privileged user. I install Mozilla 1.7.5 sv-SE as
admin and when I launch it evertyhing works just fine. However, when I log out
and try it as a privileged user nothing happends at startup. The priviledged
user and the admin have an old Mozilla 1.6-profile, but the user's is probably
more complicated since it has been used for a long time.

The strange thing is that this problem doesn't occur on any other computer in
the company (11 XP-machines) and they all contain next until the same software
(image-install). The machine in question is a PIII 800 Mhz while the others are
P4 Celeron or PIII 800.
Did you uninstall Mozilla 1.6 properly?

I have run the uninstaller for 1.6. As an additional precaution I deleted the
whole mozilla.org directory. Mozilla 1.7.5 runs nicely as administrator, but
when a "privileged user" tries to start it nothing happens.

If a previous mozilla-version isn't uninstalled in a proper way it would be
great if new mozilla-versions could detect the problem and prompt the user.

Thank your for spending your time on this problem. I need a solution soon

Does the profile manager appear when you start Mozilla with mozilla.exe
-ProfileManager? If yes, can you create a empty profile and try to start with that?

I have just tried it and no profile-manager appeared. Just to be sure I tried
running it as too admin with the same arguments and the profile-manager appeared
promptly.

When I start it as a privileged user the process terminates so quickly that it
doesn't even show up in the task-manager.

I included the installer's log that contains further information about my
environment and installation
Maybe it's the GRE? Can you look if there is a folder called mozilla.org in the
sub-folder common files (in your programs folder)?
And if yes, can you delete it and try to install again?

I have uninstalled Mozilla and deleted all files connected to it (including the
ones in shared-files). I then proceeded to clense the registry of any possible
keys that could have been left, but to no avail. I then rebooted and reinstalled
1.7.5.

I doesn't help, I'm afraid. Should I try to gather more information with a
diagnostic tool?
Can you maybe create a log with Filemon (download it from
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/source/filemon.shtml, download-link is at the
buttom)? Please zip the log and attach it here then. The handling of Filemon is
pretty easy: Start it up, set filter to Include: mozilla, try starting Mozilla
and then save the log.

Thanks for the advice. I'm afraid I can't perform the procedure until 14:00 CET
(in 16 hours). I will report when I am finished.

The mist gets thicker.

Today I arrived at the workplace where the computer is located. Since the person
using the computer is in urgent need of his e-mail-account (and thus needed
Mozilla) I decided to wipe the computer clean by reinstalling from our
workstation-image. I thought I would lose the possibillity of ironing out the
bug, but time was short so I proceeded with the HD format.

Mozilla 1.6, which came bundled with the image, worked just fine when run as a
privileged user. I proceeded with the update to 1.7.5 by (as admin) 1)
uninstalling Mozilla 1.6 2) Installing 1.7.5. When I tried to launch it as a
privileged user it failed, again! I've perfomed the same procedure on eight
other computers in an identical software-environment without any hickups.

The bug seems to be corelated with the computer's hardware since all other
possible factors have been excluded. The computer in questions is a stock
workstation from Compaq, PIII 600 Mhz. Can this be a compiler-problem (i.e. the
build breaks on specific CPUs). I will try to run filemon later.

This is the strangest bug I have encountered during my whole life.
I will run filemon during the upcoming weekend
Possibly compreg.dat problem.
> Bug 178243 : corrupt compreg.dat prevents build from starting
Reporter, search and find "compreg.dat" file and rename it to "compreg.dat.bak",
then try to start Mozilla(Profile Manager).

I don't think it's the same bug because...
1) ...my splash-screen never appears, while his does
2) ...Mozilla's process dies abruptly (after 1 second maybe (600 Mhz PIII) and
does not allocate a lot of memory.
3) ...diskspace is ample (many GBs) while the mentioned bug was caused by a lack
of it.
4) ...this problem doesn't occur when Mozilla is run as admin, only as a
"privileged user".
5) ...I deleted all Mozilla-related files between re-installs

I'm sorry, but it's definitely something else.
Already got some time to create a Filemon log :)?

> Already got some time to create a Filemon log :)?
I am sorry, but I haven't done much work. I don't have direct access to the
computer in question and can only diagnose it remotely. Unfortunately the remote
managing system seems to have suffered some sort of terminal malfunction.
Consequently we have to wait until I have the opportunity to put my hands on it.

I am very thankfull of the support and interest the Mozilla-comunity have showed
in my problem. I will inform you on any new development.

This bug has had no comments for a long time. Statistically, we have found that
bug reports that have not been confirmed by a second user after three months are
highly unlikely to be the source of a fix to the code.
