User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20041107 Firefox/1.0 Build Identifier: Mozilla Thunderbird version 1.0 (20041206) The icon in the taskbar at the nottom of the screen pops up sometimes to say new mail has been received but there is no new mail in any folder. When i search all the folders the icon disappears. Reproducible: Sometimes
Bug can happen if Thunderbird is subscribed to IMAP folder, new mail arrives, user logs in via separate client and reads mail. Although the mail is tagged as read, the new mail icon does not disappear.
This is the most irritating bug in the program. I am constantly looking for new mail because of that icon and it is not present. I'm not subscribed to an IMAP folder. I am waiting for any upgrade that fixes this problem.
I have experienced this bug but I need to explain exactly how my scenario is, in case it is different than the others who have commented. I disabled the "preview pane" in my Thunderbird so I only had to deal with headers, since most spam I want to get rid of, I can detect from the headers. The problem exists for me that the new mail icon pops up appropriately, but if the new messages come in to the active (highlighted) mailbox, and I delete the new messages without ever having them "open", the new mail icon stays. I later mistake it for me having new mail and go to check, but find nothing there... because the icon never went away. The only ways I can make it go away without having preview pane on is: 1. Open the message by double-clicking the header. 2. Clicking on another mailbox folder (such as the Trash.) I don't know if the others might have similar situations, but I do know that if I have preview pane turned on, this doesn't happen. I tested this on 14 Apr 2005 (approx: 1:00am Mountain Time) in: 1. A fresh download of Thunderbird 1.0.2 (release) 2. A fresh install (in its own directory) of the nightly build of Thunderbird downloaded around said time. 3. A fresh install (in its own directory) of the nightly build of Mozilla Application Suite downloaded around said time. All three tests proved the same result. As long as the preview pane was closed (or disabled through options) - the mail icon persisted if no mail was opened, but new mail was deleted. I don't know if it makes a difference or not, but I delete my messages by highlighting the header(s) and press Shift-Delete.
Reporter (andrec@vt.edu): are you experiencing this problem with IMAP or POP mail? See bug 197527, bug 252484, bug 253341, bug 263367, bug 304974. (In reply to comment #3) > The problem exists for me that the new mail icon pops up appropriately, but if > the new messages come in to the active (highlighted) mailbox, and I delete the > new messages without ever having them "open", the new mail icon stays. Jeff, this is bug 157115.
I have also had this bug. I have tried both Thunderbird 1.0PR (sorry can't be more specific) and Thunderbird version 1.5 Beta 1 (20050908). Occasionally (NOT every new mail check) TB will report I have an erroneous number of new mail messages (I am on Win XP Home - sys tray icon pops up, notification box rises with non-zero number of new messages). I believe it may occur when I log in for the first time and it performs the first new mail check of the session, but I haven't been able to test that thouroughly enough to say for certain yet - I'll post again if I can get the timing down. I use an IMAP server - I have two POP accounts also setup in TB and they don't give me the same problem. I'll start by describing why I don't think it is some of the bugs mentioned in comment #4; #252484 - Does not occur when switching out of TB #263367 - Does not occur every new mail check In addition these two bugs have similar symptoms but I don't seem to get the bug as often: #304974 #253341 The above bug reports recommend attaching an IMAP log - if this is useful I will post it.
I get this bug and I am only using POP addresses.
I experience the behaviour from comment #1. My scenario: I use both TB 1.5 RC1 with IMAP (at home) and Horde webmail (at work) to read email from the same mailbox. I have no subfolders or filters, all new mail goes to Inbox. 1. I read some new messages with TB, keep them in Inbox, and then later login with webmail. Webmail will show everything as read (i.e. not bold). This is how it should work. 2. I read some new messages with webmail, keep them in Inbox, and then later login with TB. TB will show a new mail notification, but the message header pane shows everything as read (i.e. not bold). The second part is the way it should work, the first part not. I.e. the new mail notification should not appear. So now I have a new mail notification but no new mail. I can only make the new mail notification go away by double clicking on the Inbox folder. Obnoxious, especially if you realize that TB somehow knew the messages were already read (by not showing the headers in bold). I guess the IMAP server can tell TB whether messages are read or not?

(In reply to comment #9) Hello Magnus Melin! Yes I am using version (just updated today- 2.0.0.12). Nice one for the quick response - hope you can help!
I haven't seen it for year myself. POP or IMAP? Do you have some filtering set up? (Esp. filtering to a second account.)
Hello, I have IMAP. I have junk mail filtering! Anyways how would the filtering have an effect on my icon that appears on my system tray? PS where are you from? Magnus is quite an interesting name!
E.g. if mail is filtered to one folder, and then analyzed for junk. We don't want a notification for junk, but the bug may be/could have been that the tray icon shows before the analysis is done on that folder. I'm from Finland!
Interesting... I'm pretty sure that the icon doesn't appear due to the Junk mail coming through. What else could this be? Doesn't Finland have a 2 or 3 month period in complete darkness like Sweden?
No idea. Yes, in the the northern parts; but let's keep this bug on focus...
Alrightee... Well what could I check to see if something else is causing this?
My guess is it has something to do with the junk mail filtering in some way. You can always try to turn that off, but it's a bit painful:)
hmmm... I would rather not turn the junk mail filtering off! Oh well! I don't mind having this bug that much to turn off the junk mail filtering! Anyways nice one for the help!
