User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20041107 Firefox/1.0 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20041107 Firefox/1.0 All the SMTP servers cannot connect after a while TB has been running. It works again only after drastic measures: e.g., restarting windows or reinstalling. Reproducible: Didn't try I think I found this bug report a few times before for different versions of TB. If you cannot get around this after so many complaints I think TB is just not a feasible solution for e-mail. It is a shame because I was quite happy with it, but this problem is so recurrent and annoying...
Always include the version number of a product if you create a bug report ! "Can't connect" means exactly what ? (error mesage) Do you use a firewall ? And how about attaching (via "create new attachment" link in this bug) a SMTP log http://www.mozilla.org/quality/mailnews/mail-troubleshoot.html
I'm expriencing the same issue. I can provide (slightly) more information : I have a 100% reproductibility rate with the following steps (which are too easy) : 1- Install Thunderbird 1.0 2- Configure SMTP server 3- Send mail (it works fine) 4- Reboot Windows 5- Send mail (it fails 100% of the time). Error message is : Sending of message failed. The message could not be sent because connecting to SMTP server smtp10.qc.aira.com failed. The server may be unavailable or is refusing SMTP connections. Please verify that your SMTP server setting is correct and try again, or else contact your network administrator. My SMTP server setting *is* correct (it worked before the reboot, and Outlook has the same settings and can send mail without problems). Sniffing on my network connections, I can see that Thunderbird generates absolutely no traffic while supposedly trying to connect to my SMTP server, so TB seems to fail without even trying to get an outbound connection. Troubleshooting (logging) my SMTP connection as described here : http://www.mozilla.org/quality/mailnews/mail-troubleshoot.html#smtp yields a single line in the logfile : 0[285440]: SMTP Connecting to: smtp10.qc.aira.com I hope this helps.
It's me again, with more information about reproductibility... I uninstalled TB and reinstalled it with different options to test the behavior, and here's what I came up with : Install TB with default settings (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird), RSS, Offline support and all the shortcuts : works fine Install TB with custom settings : - Different installation directory (E:\Program Files XP\Mozilla Thunderbird) and default options (RSS, Offline support and shortcuts) : fails after reboot Install TB with custom settings : - Default installation directory (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird) and uncheck all the options : works fine Install TB with custom settings : - Different installation directory (E:\Program Files XP\Mozilla Thunderbird) and uncheck all the options : fails after reboot The tipping point here seems to be the installation of Thunderbird in a non-standard directory (one different from C:\Program Files). Anyone else notice something similar?
no response from the reporter and it looks like a installöed firewall which is blocking the connection (that includes comment #2-#3)
