Details

Overview Description: There are duplicate entries for several search engines in the "Search using" drop-down menu in the Internet Search panel. Steps to Reproduce: 1) In the Prefs dialog select the Internet Search item from the Navigator category. 2) In the Internet Search panel click on the drop-down menu labelled "Search using". Actual Results: There are duplicate entries for the following search engines: Excite, Google!, GoTo.com, HotBot, LookSmart and Lycos. Expected Results: A single entry for each search engine except where there is localised provision such as Lycos-UK. Build Date and Platform: 2000021516 build on Mac OS 8.6 Additional Builds and Platforms: Does NOT occur on 2000021515 build on Win NT Workstation SP4 Additional Information: The duplicate entries, as far as I can tell, point to the same URLs as the originals.
This is pulled in using rdf.

On Macintosh, we include not just the search engines which we ship with, but also any other search engines you have installed. Marking this bug as INVALID.

Is there no way for the Prefs to recognise the duplicates and withhold them from the menu? The duplicate entries wouldn't inspire confidence.
Unfortunately, just because a search engine is named the same in two spots, that doesn't mean that its actually the same engine. The URL to use might be different, or the options sent might be different, or the language encodings might be different, or... well, you get the idea.
over to claudius... :-)

rjc, is there a check for dupes at all? If someone really does have the _exact_same_ engine as one we ship with is it still duplicated?
There are no checks for DUPS, nor will we be checking for DUPs... the discovery process for search engines is already very slow. If a Mac user happens to have DUP search engines, its relatively easy for non-beginners to remove one of the DUPs. Also, note that virtually all the search engines which we'll be shipping with are being hand-created by Netcenter, so there should be no EXACT DUPs. (Something will be different, even if its subtle.)

I don't think that users are going to necessarily know a) that Mozilla is using Sherlock style plug-ins and b) how to remove them. What they are going to see , however, are two entries for Google!, HotBot etc. Could the search plug-ins that ship with Netscape/Mozilla not be identified as such with a prefix/suffix?
