NB this is related to / duplicates existing reported bugs (see also 248891,
267567) but I hope adds more information about possible cause / impacts / Severity

Description

PDF links (such as that found at
http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/docs4/consult_stopsearch.html ) can be saved (save
link target as) but is simply clicked do not open acrobat automatically as
expected (and as it USED TO until a few days ago !!)

hint about possible cause ?

.. I cant be sure this is the reason but NB I loaded a mozilla update a few days
ago, this is the forst time I recall trying to hit a PDF since then. I suspect
the update has corrupted my helper app definitions in some way ? Also NB that I
also have a standalone firefox installation (Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win 9x
4.90; en-US; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20041107 Firefox/1.0) that i did NOT upgrade and
the PDF doesnt open on that either - and that used to work. So the update (or
whatever) seems to have broken something global

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. open eg http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/docs4/consult_stopsearch.html
2. click on the pdf link ..
3.

Actual Results:
Mozilla / firefax looks like it is loading something (the top right animated
gecko M moves) for a fraction of a second, then it reverts to a static M (and at
the foot of the page says "done"

Expected Results:
opened acrobat and within that, the pdf doc

I have noticed a number of links did the same (ie nothing) during today but at
first I just put it don to glitches or whatever - sorry I didnt keep records.
but its quite a few. I cant say if they were all PDF's or if it could be some
other extensions / help applicatoons affected as well. Will update if I find
others now I am looking for it
Used to work fine. seems to have been corrupted when loading an update (the UK
english linguified latest mozzilla a few days ago). corruption has also broken a
separate browser (firefox) ie damage spread outside mozilla

placed in general despite suspecting problem is in the install because that is
what the help text in bugzilla tells yo uto do for problems that only reveal
themselves when mozilla starts !
does your actually installed version of Acrobat reader correspond with the
version number Mozilla thinks it is? (write about:plugins in the urlbar)
