This is a feature request for pre-indexed mail search on IMAP accounts. Today,
the header search is quite fast (since it's downloaded those locally), but the
full body search takes quite some time on large mailboxes across the network.
Outlook suffers the same problem, but there is an extension called Lookout which
runs and creates a search index (much like the recent desktop search products
recently). As a result, the full search is very fast. Could a search feature
like this be added to thunderbird?

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. set up IMAP account with a large number of mail
2. to a full body search

Actual Results:
It worked succesfully, but very slow (in minutes) to get through all of my mail.

Expected Results:
The same, but faster ;)

Obviously, this happens on any OS, any architecture, any version.

This bug has had no comments for a long time. Statistically, we have found that
bug reports that have not been confirmed by a second user after three months are
highly unlikely to be the source of a fix to the code.

While your input is very important to us, our resources are limited and so we
are asking for your help in focussing our efforts. If you can still reproduce
this problem in the latest version of the product (see below for how to obtain a
copy) or, for feature requests, if it's not present in the latest version and
you still believe we should implement it, please visit the URL of this bug
(given at the top of this mail) and add a comment to that effect, giving more
reproduction information if you have it.

If it is not a problem any longer, you need take no action. If this bug is not
changed in any way in the next two weeks, it will be automatically resolved.
Thank you for your help in this matter.

Is this bug specific to IMAP? Does Thunderbird already do pre-indexed searches for POP?
Keywords: perf
Summary: feature request for pre-indexed search on mail → Pre-indexed search on mail
Some IMAP servers use indexes and apparently Thunderbird takes advantage of this:
