With the widespread use of firefox, a lot of new users have filed bugs, but not knowing better, they tend to file bugs in Firefox:general. That's partly because to them, 'Firefox' is an easy choice for 'product', but then they find that there's no appropriate component for their bugs under 'firefox' and end up filing it under 'general'. A warning or advice had better be given in such a case. Especially, they'd better be guided to take a look at the list of categories under 'Core'. With this measure in hand, we'd have a higher chance of getting module owner's attention (or that of those with necessary skills) in a timely manner.

I don't think we're goint to be able to do much more to educate most of these one-time reporters about the distinctions between the app layer and the core features.

I personally think this is a WONTFIX. This is exactly what the Firefox:General component is intended for, i.e. dumping ground for bugs that the reporter doesn't know where they belong, only that they have something to do with Firefox. The QA folks usually attack this component on Bug Days to re-triage them to the proper product/component.

Agreed. We've started a serious effort to give the less capable reporters some alternatives to Bugzilla.
