I see this too sometimes. Maybe it's related to bug 178120.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was related. I have a problem similar to this.
Oftentimes, usually the first time I open Firefox after I boot up, the bookmarks
will be gone. No little chevron dealie, no bookmarks, nothing. Also, the tabs
are missing, even though I have multiple home pages. I was looking through the
bugs to see if there were any similar ones when I came across this one, so I
decided to post my troubles.

I also have this problem but only since I upgraded from Firefox 1.0.1 or 1.0.2
(I don't know which exactly) to 1.0.4. I've upgraded recently but so far it
seems to happen the first time I start Firefox on each day.

I was looking for a solution to the problem I have been experiencing over the last month or so, this reported bug appears to be close to what I'm seeing.  Usually if I start Firefox from a shortcut icon - toolbar menu, it will load, but the bookmark toolbar will not display at all and the home page will not load.  Just a blank screen and I am not able to type anything in the address window.  If I open a second session (clicking icon shortcut) it will load normally.

I've also seen this when using Thunderbird and selecting a link in an email, without Firefox running.  Firefox attempts to open the link, but will exhibit the same behavior with the bookmark toolbar and not able to enter text into the address bar.
