RESOLVED DUPLICATE of bug 261272

People

(Reporter: misty.n.graf, Assigned: mscott)

Details

User-Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1; .NET CLR 1.1.4322)
Build Identifier: version 1.0 (20041206)

When typing something in the "to:\" field, if you hit the "Enter" key before
the list of suggestions comes up (the drop-down that suggests names from your
address book), 2 names will load into the to:\ field instead of just 1. The
email will be sent to both people.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open a new compose message.
2. Type a partial name in the to:\ field. (You may need to make sure you have
at least 2 names in the address book that contain what you type - i.e. if you
have a Mike & a Michele in your address book, type "Mi")
3. Hit the enter key before Thunderbird loads the names into the drop-down
list.

Actual Results:
Two entries will appear in the to:\ field (in my example, both Mike & Michelle
would appear in the to:\ field & the email would go to both of them)
It appears in this format:
Mike <Mike@none.com> >> "Michelle" <Michelle@none.com>

Expected Results:
Only one name should appear in the to:\ field. We use Thunderbird at work &
everyone has just noticed this bug since we upgraded to version 1.0. This is
a bit frustrating. We have employees who have sent out confidential
information, not realizing that it went to 2 people instead of just the
intended person. We are using an LDAP as well as personal address books, so
sometimes the names list takes a few seconds to pop up.
Summary: thunderbird puts two names in the to:\ field → thunderbird puts two names in the to: field
Version: unspecified → 1.0
Let me know if I need to report this as a different bug, but today we found
another weird thing with the to: field.

1. Type a name in the to: field & hit "enter"
2. Delete that line (as if you changed your mind about who to send it to)
3. Type a different 1st name (one that's in your address book) & hit enter
before it has time to search names

Results: Thunderbird puts the 1st name you typed (in step 1) in the to: field
instead of the 2nd name.

We never noticed any of this stuff until we converted to 1.0.
In further testing, we have noticed that this bug only occurs when you type a
name that appears both in a personal address book AND an ldap address book.
For example, if I type "mi" & hit my enter key really fast, it pulls in a name
from my personal address book & to the right of that puts one from my ldap.
If I start typing a name that is not in my personal address book & hit enter
before the list loads, it does not pull in 2 names (it only pulls one name
from the ldap).
I think the problem in comment 1 is bug 271439.

The symptom in the original report -- two *different* names on the line -- is
not exactly seen in the dupe, but my sense is that these are the same problem
with slightly different manifestations. I'll copy the specifics over to that
bug.

I don't believe this bug is the same as bug #261272. That bug is something we
experienced with version .8 & are no longer experiencing since upgrading.
OK, reopening.

I think this is a dup - I have a patch in bug 261272. Once that's checked in,
folks can download the next nightly build and tell me which bug(s) is/are fixed.
