Right, I've been meaning to reply here for some time: Artwork can also be influenced by themes. If you think the default ones are bad, try giving us an alternative. Also note the already existing bug about this subject: bug 113760, where people have indeed attached other versions of the icon. I propose this bug be marked wontfix, until or unless the reporter gives a valid alternative.

there is a preference to turn off faces: /pref munger.face false et viola, your IRC client becomes text-only.

The icons within ChatZilla are entirely themed, and if you don't like them you can replace them either with your own theme or userChrome.css. You can also turn off the emoticons entirely as described in other comments. Everyone I've asked has no issues with them, and while I wouldn't say the icons [ex. emoticons] are really professional, they are pretty good, and not in need of replacing.
