do you have a virus checker installed? This sounds like one of the weird things that can be traced to a virus checker stalling things.
No, I do not have any anti-virus installed (I don't need any thanks to Firefox ;-) )...
I have also tried to reinstall, but it keeps going the same way. All other folders (trash, junk etc...) could be clicked and messages are displayed immediately. I only have about 15 messages in Inbox. It have started only today, because yesterday I was able to check all my emails with no problems.
I have deleted Inbox and Inbox.msf files (moved it to different unrelated directory) and Thunderbird started and created its own Inbox and Inbox.msf files again. Now it works fine. But what's troubling is that Inbox file (former) had about 400 Mb filesize, however only about ten emails were there and Trash is also about 400 Mb, but there are thousands of emails. Could this be related? That Thunderbird somehow mismanaged the file structure? Also, I have just updated about two days ago from 0.9... In case this could be related. Thanks for any possible comments on this.
I had the same problem with one of the three inboxes I manage with Thunderbird, and a thread on the support forum is active with several users complaining of a similar problem (see http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=245138&start=45&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=). I use Windows XP (Service Pack 2), and the problem began with TB .9.?. I upraded to 1.0.2, but there was no change. Thinking the problem may be due to the large size of the inbox (although I use POP3 and had only 181 messages in my TB inbox, the file size was 277MB), I backed up the inbox file then deleted the original. Starting fresh, TB now has no trouble and the inbox no longer hangs. Other symptom: In addition to hanging, the tally of the number of messages in the inbox was wildly inaccurate (on the order of thousands) and also inconsistent. An uneducated hypothesis: Could this be a bug that only becomes symptomatic when inbox file size becomes so large as to create a memory overload?
