Eudora and Outlook imports mail messages with headers created while composing the
message during import rather than headers from the original message. This means
that all mail messages imported pick up the Date (among other things) of the
actual import. This severly limits (if not eliminates) the usefullness of
importing from those formats.
I have a fix ready to go for this as soon as I track down a reviewer.
*** Bug 28251 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
Just a note on the fix. This is completely internal to the import modules -
doesn't change or add any calls to code outside of the import modules themselves.
So the fix won't effect any other parts of mozilla.
Woops. This was reviewed and fixed on 2/18/2000. Forgot to mark the bug fixed
after I checked in the code!

Using 2/23 commerical build on Windows NT 4.0, I was able to import and view
messages that retained their original send dates. B
But, using a debug build from 2/21, I could not see the messages at all. Still
investigating.
Using the debug build from 2/23, I created a new profile, added an IMAP account,
imported mail from Eudora and then checked the Eudora folder. I got the same
result as yesterday - no messages displayed in "In" folder and the status bar
says 'Creating mail message'.
I started up the commerical build from 2/24, load the same profile and went to
mail. There were no Eudora folders at all.
Going to ask Esther to reproduce this.
Is the problem that the mail is not being import OR is it that the Mail window
will not show the messages? I suspect that the UI is just not doing the right
thing. An easy way to test this is to import, then exit mozilla, then re-run
mozilla and look for the mail. If it shows up the second time then it has
something to do with displaying the messages rather than actually importing them.
You should also be able to examine the mailbox file on disk to see if it contains
the mail or not.
I can see the Eudora folders exist on the disk under the server3 name. However,
when I start up the commerical build (for the second time) and look in the mail
folders pane, there is no indication of a Eudora server or folders.
I need to clarify something. When I created the profile and then did the import,
I could see Eudora folders but never the messages in the thread pane. But upon
restarting mozilla, I could not see the Eudora folders either.

Esther was able to reproduce the problem of not seeing any messages in the
thread pane and having the 'Creating mail message' on the status bar. She used a
new profile with an imap account and imported an imap account from Eudora. She
was using today's mozilla build (2/25) and was able to see the folders.
We inspected further and saw that messages existed in the "In" file but that
"In.msf" did not contain recepients and headers like other msf files have.
I am attaching the In and the In.msf from my system as an example.

I've reproduced this behaviour with Outlook Express as well which means it has
nothing to do with importing mail headers properly. The problem lies in whatever
code parses the mailbox after it has been imported. We can track that with this
bug but the proper thing would be to close this one and create a new bug that
better reflects the problem. I'll try and get more info on how or who can help
with this but probably won't have any useful info until 3/2/00.

with IMAP, we don't parse any mailbox - I'm confused what this has to do with
the upgrade/import code.

This isn't related to IMAP at all. The import code always creates a new mail
server of type "none" and imports the mailboxes into that server. Whatever
profiles or servers created beforehand are not affected. The problem is when
those local mailboxes get parsed.

The mail all appears to be imported correctly. The UI refreshes for me if I quit
and start mozilla. If that fails, delete the corresponding .msf file and the UI
will then refresh. This worked fine for me with the attached files. Since this
problem is not related to importing mail headers properly, I filed a new bug that
properly describes this problem. Bug #29814.
