Mac OS Finder has the Preview app as the default for opening PDF files.
Yes firefox, both in the 'what to do with this file' dialog and the downloads
preferences, lists Adobe Acrobat as the default application for PDF files.

Reproducible: Always
Summary: firefoax suggests Adobe Acrobat as default PDF app instead of Preview → Mac: firefox suggests Adobe Acrobat as default PDF app instead of Preview
Hey Joachim, is it possible to change it in FF, or does it not give the option?
Yes, it is possible to select a particular application for handling PDF in the
second item in the dialog box.

My point is that the 'default application' suggestion does not match what the OS
considers to be the default.

Visited http://www.unicode.org/charts/
Selected a chartDownload dialog asked if I wanted to open with Preview (default)

Might this just be an aviary bug?
Here's the sheet for PDF download options on Firefox 1.0.3.
The Default Application option should be 'Preview'.

I am using

Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; en-US; rv:1.7.10) Gecko/20050716
Firefox/1.0.6

and I am not given the option to change from Acrobat 6.0 to any other
application, nor does PDF appear in the File Types selection list in download
preferences
bug 219973 ?
Does this still happen using Fx 1.5?

Yes, Firefox 1.5 still suggests Adobe Acrobat as the default for PDF.
I've been having the opposite problem. Thought the update might fix it. Running OS 10.4.4 and Firefox 1.5.0.1. Adobe is the default app for handling .pdf files, but Firefox wants to use Preview. No options for dealing with it under Prefs>Downloads>Edit Actions.
It is also impossible to change the PDF handling to use the Mac default of Preview. There is no PDF entry in the list of handlers and the short list presented in the download window contains only an old version of Acrobat Reader (v5, not v7).
Are these all dupes of each other? Or perhaps related to another meta-bug?

Has anybody tried this with a new profile on a Firefox 2.x build?

It WORKSFORME on Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X; en-US; rv:1.9a7pre) Gecko/2007072204 Minefield/3.0a7pre
Samuel, bug 354971 is similar to this one but whether preview or acrobat reader is the default app I want to have a list of applications which can handle pdf files. The system default should be offered as default and more applications should be selectable with the pulldown menu. I don't think that's a good way either to have to specify the app within the file types dialog.

Should we combine all the bug reports to a summary like "Offer more than the default application to handle a file type"?

I believe that's covered in the new content handling UI stuff, but I could be wrong.

Yesterday I tried the latest trunk build and wasn't able to select any other application when opening a pdf file, which is working on Windows and Linux for ages. So there is work for a new UI? Do you have a bug report for me?
This bug was reported using Firefox 3.0 or older, which is no longer supported. The bug has also not been changed in over 500 days and is still in UNCO.
