User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20041107 Firefox/1.0 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20041107 Firefox/1.0 Going to a Russian website with the American Firefox browser version will display the website with Russian (Cyrillic) characters, but the title bar displays only ?'s instead of the correct Russian/Cyrillic text. NOTES: - The Russian language pack is installed. - Opening the Source code, the Cyrillic characters are correctly displayed between the TITLE tags. - This also occurs on other Russian websites Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Go to http://www.petarda.ru/ (with Russian language pack installed, if needed for your system) using an American version of Firefox. 2. Notice the text is in Cyrillic characters, then look at the Title bar. 3. Click on "View" --> "Page Source" and verify the text between the TITLE tags correctly displays Cyrillic characters. Actual Results: The webpage displays with Cyrillic characters, but the title bar displays only ?'s for each character. Expected Results: For the title bar to display the Cyrillic characters correctly (and for all other languages when the language pack for that particular language is installed).

Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; en-US; rv:1.8b2) Gecko/20050221 Firefox/1.0+ WFM. You might want to try with a newer build, but it could be that drawing windows's titles is an OS responsibility and outside Firefox's control. Does your Win98 handle Cyrillic characters elsewhere? Can you (for example) create files or folders with cyrillic characters in the name?
(In reply to comment #1) You're right. This might be an OS problem. I can type Cyrillic in apps and view Cyrillic web pages, but I can't use Cyrillic for file or folder names in my W98. This text box accepts Cyrillic characters, though. For example: Kak Дела? I can understand the limitation of W98 using characters that are not in it's default character set, but I thought the title bar of a browser is just a display, and if it displays correctly in the browser window, it would also be able to display the same character set in the title bar. Since this is a Mozilla app, I thought it would pull directly from the page source as it does for the content of the web page, instead of go through the MS OS.
(In reply to comment #2) It appears the Cyrillic characters are accepted as input into this field, but, when I reviewed the previous comment, the Cyrillic characters didn't come through.
This is still present in 1.0.6 on Windows XP. Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.10) Gecko/20050716 Firefox/1.0.6 The characters appear properly in the tab title, but not the window title bar or the button on the Windows taskbar. I can indeed create files with Cyrillic characters in the name, and open them with Word 2003, and the Cyrillic characters appear in both the Word title bar and the Windows taskbar. Thus, it ought to be possible for Firefox to correctly display the characters in the title bar.

Title bar and button on Task bar still fail on Windows 98 with Russian language pack. Works fine in XP, though. Firefox: 2.0.0.3 (English version) OS: W98 & XPSP2 (Same Firefox version is on both OSs.)

This WFM using Firefox 2.0.0.3 on Windows XP. This was a completely fresh install of both Firefox and Windows XP. Reporter, can you please try with a new profile (or maybe even a new user account on XP?)? http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_Manager
As reported in Comment #5, this works on XP with Firefox 2.0.0.3. It still fails on W98 with the Russian language pack with Firefox 2.0.0.3. If Windows 98 is still supported by Firefox, this is still a bug. If Windows 98 is no longer going to be supported, then this bug can be closed. Thanks. :)

Windows 98 is still supported by Firefox 2.0.0.x, however it will be unsupported by Firefox 3, which is where a fix for this bug would take place. It's highly unlikely that, as a non-regression, this would get fixed in Firefox 2.0.0.x. Based on comment 7, this works on Windows XP, so closing this bug out as WFM.
