i should be able to see the hundreds of bookmarks

Any crash/power loss last time before? Looks like bug 193749.

For the second time in 3 months, most of my bookmarks disappeared.  In addition,
the home page re-set itself to the Firefox start page.  Windows XP running
Firefox version 1.0.1

You've somehow created a new profile, or have lost access to your old one, which
explains why all your settings are reset. As Ostgote mentioned, it could be due
to a crash or power failure, or any number of other things. Try the steps at
http://www.bytecave.net/anders/guide/mpguide/TroubleShooting.html#NewProfile to
try and recover your settings.

There are also people on IRC and the Forums who would be willing to help you
out. http://www.mozilla.org/support/#forums has a good list of resources.

As a support request, this is certainly valid, but as a bug report, it is not.
These kind of reports very rarely lead to bug fixes, because of the lack of
information. Please be aware that these types of problems are being looked into
though, as shown by bug 253950, bug 277828, and other bugs related to improving
the core profile code.
