Hmm, now I can't reproduce it anymore also. But this was after I've done the
other thing: pressed OK instead of Cancel.
Maybe this has got something to do with the fact that for the first time
somewhere in a pref no value has been set or something like that?
I think I know a way to reliable way to 100% reproduce the bug.
- Type about:config in the url bar.
- Use the filter and type 'download' in there.
- For the pref 'browser.download.dir' right-click on it and choose 'Reset'. 
After that, follow the instructions I mentioned in comment 0.
Oops the third step in comment 3 should be:
- - For the pref 'browser.download.downloadDir' right-click on it and choose
'Reset'.
So no 'browser.download.dir' but 'browser.download.downloadDir'
