Details

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.4) Gecko/20030624 Netscape/7.1 (ax)
Build Identifier: Mozilla 1.7.5 AND Netscape 7.2

I put Mozilla 1.7.5 on a newly purchased drive,
with a fresh install of Win98SE. (yeah, I know)
The browser and mail client both repeatedly stalled,
i.e.: for multi-second periods the keyboard or mouse
buttons would not respond, though the pouse pointer
moved normally. After the stall, the system would
catch up _some_ of the keystrokes or mouse actions,
but not all, and interleaved mousing/keying _sequences_
were typically garbled.

Since my confidence in Mozilla is quite high, I suspected nearly
everything else first, disk latency, "stepping" CPU, viruses, etc.
I even reverted to Netscape, which had worked just fine before
on a different box. Unknowingly, I went to Netscape 7.2, which
exhibited the same symptoms.

After benchmarks, disk diagnostics and virus scanners,
I eventually downloaded Process Explorer
It showed that Mozilla/Netscape itself was hogging the
CPU in the dead spots. The CPU utilization graph
looked like a rectangular wave at 100% for
5 of every 12 seconds.

Knowing that, I downloaded/installed Netscape 7.1
from their archives. (NOT 7.2!)
Version 7.1 seems to be working OK now.

I wish I could help more, but all I can do now
is suggest that something common to
Mozilla 1.7.5 and Netscape 7.2 but not in Netscape 7.1,
seems incompatible with Win98.

All the bug reports below seem to cite similar symptoms.
I've not checked to see how many of them are from
Win 98, XP, or other platforms.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. format new HD, install Win 98SE, install ZoneAlarm
2. download/install Mozilla 1.7.5 or Netscape 7.2
3. run browser or email client

Actual Results:
1. delays in seeing keystrokes
2. delays in mouse actions, like scrollbar manipulation
3. garbling of interleaved mousing/keying _sequences_

Expected Results:
act on mouse/keyboard input without delay or reordering

These seem the same symptoms reported below.
I just didn't know how to add my observations
to the existing reports.

This is an automated message, with ID "auto-resolve01".

This bug has had no comments for a long time. Statistically, we have found that
bug reports that have not been confirmed by a second user after three months are
highly unlikely to be the source of a fix to the code.

While your input is very important to us, our resources are limited and so we
are asking for your help in focussing our efforts. If you can still reproduce
this problem in the latest version of the product (see below for how to obtain a

you still believe we should implement it, please visit the URL of this bug
(given at the top of this mail) and add a comment to that effect, giving more
reproduction information if you have it.

If it is not a problem any longer, you need take no action. If this bug is not
changed in any way in the next two weeks, it will be automatically resolved.
