While trying to print a document containing emoticons, the emoticons aren't
printed...
Intead of emoticons there are blank spaces printed.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Activate the option "emoticons if inactive"
2. Open a document containing emoticons
3. Try to print it or run "preview before printing"
Actual Results:
Emoticons aren't printed, and blank spaces are printed instead.
Expected Results:
Emoticons should be printed or the associated text like ":-)"

What emoticons are you refering to? If you are using an extension try contacting
to extension creator about the bug.
Summary: Emoticons aren't printed → Emoticons aren't printed

I mean emoticons included in Mozilla thunderbird as default. The one you
activate by using :
Tools->Options
click on the "display" tab
and check "Display display emoticons as graphics"
While using this option, emoticons (like :-) ;-) :'( or :-p )appear graphically
in the "message viewer".
But when I print my e-mail, blank spaces are replacing the "emoticons".
Note : blank spaces appear too in the "print preview"

Hmm, what happens if you select "print background images" (or something similar)
in your print settings?
Using the "print background images" option allows to print emoticons.
Thanks...
But why aren't they printed without selecting this parameter? Are emoticons
considered as background images ?
(Attachment is a print screen of the "print preview")
Concerning Emoticons, there are already some problems
First of all, the space interval before a smiley is too big.
And sometimes, as you can see in the attachment file, emoticons are
duplicated... randomly

> Are emoticons considered as background images ?
The emoticon graphics is done by a <span> with a background-image. This could
still be a valid bug, though. Not sure if one should expect people to know that
they have to select "print background images" in order to print emoticon graphics...

That should probably go in another bug. I can imagine that the space interval is
there by purpose, but the duplication sounds like a bug to me.

Concerning duplication...
I think this should go to another bug.
I made a few tests in order to understand how it works (or bugs). The duplicated
emoticon appears in the center of the page (as if it was a background image) and
is the duplicata of the first emoticon found in the page.
If the page selected is the first page, there is no duplicated emoticons. So
this bug appears on page 2 - 3, etc...
If the page selected doesn't contain any emoticons, there is no duplicated
emoticons.
I'll send you a sample mail.

This is an automated message, with ID "auto-resolve01".
This bug has had no comments for a long time. Statistically, we have found that
bug reports that have not been confirmed by a second user after three months are
highly unlikely to be the source of a fix to the code.
While your input is very important to us, our resources are limited and so we
are asking for your help in focussing our efforts. If you can still reproduce
this problem in the latest version of the product (see below for how to obtain a
copy) or, for feature requests, if it's not present in the latest version and
you still believe we should implement it, please visit the URL of this bug
(given at the top of this mail) and add a comment to that effect, giving more
reproduction information if you have it.
If it is not a problem any longer, you need take no action. If this bug is not
changed in any way in the next two weeks, it will be automatically resolved.
Thank you for your help in this matter.

The original report is still valid. Since emoticons are background images, you
have to have "print background images" enabled in order to print them.

in which case, isn't this bug WFM and the premise incorrect that "The original report is still valid"?

The bug (if we can call this a bug) is still present in Thunderbird 1.5.0.4. Isn't there any way to have the emoticons graphically displayed as images and not as background images (so that they print all the time)? Trying to explain this stuff of background images to somebody who never wrote an HTML page is very difficult...

Hi there... Made the test today to check. It sounds better, and see the attached PDF file (same thing on a printer) : test message-Transparency.pdf
Note : I used PDFCreator for printing the e-mail.
As you can see smileys are here, in right position, but transparency considers smileys' background as black.

Guillaume, thanks for filing and following up & providing illustration.
Good news, emoticons always print for me on WinXP / TB17/TB Trunk 24.0a1 (2013-06-21), regardless of "print background images" setting.
Only from composition, we just print the emoticon text, which may or may not be by design, but anyway, it's kinda trivial.
I don't see duplication, and I don't see black emoticon background either.
