User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20041107 Firefox/1.0
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20041107 Firefox/1.0

I have tried using both the arrow up that appears in the right-hand corner and
the menu choice in advanced settings. It will check for the critical update and
find it. Then it will appear to be "downloading and installing." It jsut hangs
there - for hours. Nothing happens. Next day, after a reboot, it will find the
same critical update again, and the arrow will reappear.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Attempt to download critical update, using either arrowup icon or menu choice
2. Get hung at popup claiming to be downloading and installing
3. Inability to hit "next" - never finishes.

Actual Results:
Same as I said - nothing.

Expected Results:
Downloaded and installed, allowed me to hit hext and finish.
Severity: blocker → critical
I have experienced the same problem. WinXP Pro..Gateway computer

The problem occurs with critical updates and extension updates. I get an arrow
in the upper right corner of the screen, and I get a message in the lower right
corner telling me updates are available. Using either of the arrows, or
manually through tools, I get a window telling me that updates are downloading,
etc. Nothing happens.
Heidi and Tom, are you able to get updates now? It's possible that you were
connecting to one of the mirrors in our network of servers that hadn't yet
received the updates.

Sounds like Bug 288054 - Unchecking "Allow web sites to install software" causes
software
update to hang

Check the Software update setting in the Advanced section of the options
http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/options#advanced
Rechecking "allow websites to install software" fixed this on my system. I think
it looks like a bug because it doesn't manifest itself until the next update.

It should be noted that while this isn't a bug, the option is ambiguously
labeled. The user should get some indication that by "Allowing sites to install
software," they still have to WHITELIST sites--that it *doesn't* mean that any
site can install software. This means that by UNchecking the box, NO sites can
install software--including Mozilla's!
