Years of trying to use Mozilla and Thunderbird on the Mac have taught me that
only the Backspace key works to delete messages; the Delete key does not work
(bug 57510, bug 242864).

Now I'm using Ubuntu, and what do I find? Only the Delete key works to delete
messages; the Backspace key does not work. Aaargh!
reading the bugs mentioned by you it looks as if backspace is not ment to delete messages. on mac backspace is used to do this, because some mac keyboards don't have a delete key - but that is an exceptional architecture.

So I guess: Not A bug!
Yes, this is intended behaviour on Linux/Win - and many users there would be quite surprised if VK_BACK would delete messages there...

...of course, this doesn't work that well if running thunderbird in a virtualboxed linux on a macbook...
there's a keyconfig extension, but it is not available in the extension repo.
you can follow links from http://kb.mozillazine.org/Keyconfig_extension, download the xpi and then install it from the file. this ancient extension still works with thunderbird 38.6.
