Mozilla 1.8b
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8b) Gecko/20050217

Normally, in the msg list pane, one of the column headings has an arrow in
it that points up or down, indicating that the displayed list is sorted on
this column, ascending or descending. This worked in all moz 1.8a*
(although the arrow pointed down for asending order, and up for descending).
But in 1.8b the arrow is completely missing. Regardless of what column you
sort on, or whether the sort is ascending or descending, the arrow simply
doesn't appear.
Didt they vanish a while back? Looks like a dup of bug 248787
It does look like a dup of bug 248787, but that bug was filed against 1.7!
I had the sort arrrows working just fine in all the 1.8a* versions,
but now they're gone in 1.8b. So to me it looks like a regression
between 1.8a6 and 1.8b. Maybe these have the same cause, or maybe not.

theme or packaging issue?
Assignee: sspitzer → mail
Nelson Bolyard, are you still encountering this problem with a current build?
WFM with Moz 1.8b2-0516, Win2K, Pinball theme.

If you are still seeing it, which theme are you using?
When I report bugs against a mozilla product, I ensure that I am using only
the themes that are part of the product. That way I am not reporting a bug
with some code that is not part of the product.
I mostly use the classic theme, and that is the theme relevant here.

Still seeing this on Win XP Pro with Mozilla 1.8b2
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8b2) Gecko/20050523

Which Theme?

I am seeing this in Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9a1) Gecko/20051219 SeaMonkey/1.5a

Is related to the fact (at least in my case) that status area is not being set, i.e. status area never clears "opening folder" or "downloading message".

above comment was Bug 320732 and that fix doesn't help the column indicator.

no tighter regression window than "looks like a regression between 1.8a6 and 1.8b."? could still have a common cause with Bug 248787.

what is really interesting, to me anyway, is it doesn't happen on my w2k machine. only on XP. Has anyone reported this against non-XP?

I think it's possible that this problem is related to the graphics card driver.
I experience this problem on a WinXP Pro box with an NVidia graphics card.
I do NOT experience this problem on a WinXP Home box with an ATI graphics card.

Wayne, I gather that you've also seen this problem. What kind of graphics card/driver is present on the system(s) where you have seen it?

my system with nvidia is the only one that fails:
*XP-Pro work NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 driver version 5.2.1.6
  XP-home home Hercules Prophet 4500
  w2k S3 Pro Savage

I seriously doubt that this issue is an XP only issue, and also doubt that it is a graphics card related issue. Why? Please see Bug 326323 (or more specificly Bug 326323 comment 9).

Nelson (small world, ain't it?)

see Bug 326323 comment 6 and Bug 326323 comment 10.
Are sort arrows missing in bookmarks and address book?
Can you make these problems go away by switching themes (may take multiple attempts)?
for bookmarks, see bug 205378 comment 17. firefox put the arrows back for bookmarks.

I should add that I made that discovery when I replaced an NVIDIA graphics
card with an ATI card on my WinXP Home box, and the problem went away.

Yes, on my NVIDIA box, they are missing in those windows also.

I will have to play with that and let you know.

Nelson, results? (this relates to my comments - bug Bug 326323 comment 10)

Severity: normal → minor
Tested on a nvidia box, with
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9a1) Gecko/20060723 SeaMonkey/1.5a

I Found that SM 1.5a thought I had no theme selected.
When I selected one, and restarted SM, the arrows appeared as expected.

They're still reversed (points down when ascending, and up when descending)
but at least they do appear.
WFM then. ascending/descending is another bug
