User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.8b2) Gecko/20050303 Firefox/1.0+ Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.8b2) Gecko/20050303 Firefox/1.0+ I'm not sure whether the split pane should be vertical or horizontal, optional or whatever, but anyway, for example: left hand pane [ today view of events ] right hand pane [ month view of events ] Maybe customisable to allow any combination of views, including clicking on an event and its properties appearing in the other pane. Reproducible: Always

I don't understand this bug, please reopen with more information and possibly a mockup screenshot if you are still interested in this.

Wow, this was from a long time ago, I don't remember filing this :) I think what I wanted was essentially to have two calendar views available in the same window, in different panes. For example, this would be handy if one generally likes to work in month/multi-week view, but has enough appointments set on a daily basis to make it desirable to click on a particular day and see the list of appointments for that day, perhaps in an hourly slot view. This would make sense with the rise in wide-screen monitors. I've done a horrible mock-up job, but I'll attach it in a moment. I guess it's like Outlook's default layout of: [folder list pane] [message list pane] [message preview pane]

So imagine that you click on a day in the right-hand pane, and a detail of that day appears in the left pane. Also imagine that I have more appointments on the selected day that can be shown in the month view without an enormously-tall screen. By all means switch the pane positions so that the week/month/multi-week view is the middle pane and the day detail pane is the right-most pane (calendar list / todo remaining on left). Just a thought.

No reference to the bug / patch that fixed this. (Or even that things are now as the OP wanted.)

Rather than making things complicated and somehow putting the views side by side, I suggest we rather make sure that things work with multiple windows. If you want to see different views next to each other, just open a second window and tile the windows accordingly. Aside from that, note that Thunderbird 3 beta 2 and Lightning 1.0pre have a tabbing model, that allows to open (currently only one) view in a tab. It might be possible to increase this limit, but my concerns would be performance related. Aside from that, if you really want two views in one window, I'd rather suggest to do this in an extension. To compare, Firefox doesn't allow splitting up the tab pane to show two tabs next to each other, although sometimes I too would have found this useful. I'm sure there is an extension to do it though. Are you ok with closing this bug as WONTFIX and adding the "extension fodder"annotation? While I do see the reasoning behind your proposal, I think the workarounds are cheap and possible issues w.r.t. multiple windows will be covered with bug 332401.
