User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.6) Gecko/20050225 Firefox/1.0.1 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.6) Gecko/20050225 Firefox/1.0.1 I tried deleting about 1000 small email messages, each of size 14kb off of my IMAP server using thunderbird. When I did this Thunderbird starting going nuts and began to eat up memory very quickly. I eventually had to force quit thunderbird to prevent it from eating up more memory and I don't know how far it would have gone. I have several screen shots of the process. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Get many small email messages (they were automatically sent to me by a router) 2. Try deleting them from IMAP server 3. Watch thunderbird freak out

What version of GoogleDesktop are you using? It's possible that the e-mail indexing is what's consuming memory, and since the e-mail indexing calls into thunderbird, it might get counted against Thunderbird's memory useage. Not that the e-mail indexing should consume thunderbird memory like that, but I don't think deleting a bunch of e-mails from the trash should really consume much memory at all. Is this reproducible?

(In reply to comment #4) > What version of GoogleDesktop are you using? I'm not in front of my computer right now so I can't give you the exact version. However its the newest one, I just downloaded it a few days ago. (March 9 2005) > It's possible that the e-mail indexing is what's consuming memory Yes that's possible. I'll turn googledesktop off try deleting them again. > Is this reproducible? On my machine it is... I let the machine run for about ten minutes and then windows starts freaking out after about 2 gigabytes of memory are being used. At that point thunderbird crashes. However none of the emails are deleted. When I go back and try deleting them again, the same thing will happen. I don't know if it reproducible on another thunderbird account. Someone should try sending themselves about 1000 emails and then deleting them.
FYI, I was having this same problem. Once I read this bug, I realized that the excessive memory usage did start happening about the time I installed Google Desktop. Since removing it, Thunderbird is now at the previous memory usage level of ~30 meg.

I can confirm that it is also Google desktop search which is causing the problem. I turned it off and was able to delete the emails with no problem.

This is an automated message, with ID "auto-resolve01". This bug has had no comments for a long time. Statistically, we have found that bug reports that have not been confirmed by a second user after three months are highly unlikely to be the source of a fix to the code. While your input is very important to us, our resources are limited and so we are asking for your help in focussing our efforts. If you can still reproduce this problem in the latest version of the product (see below for how to obtain a copy) or, for feature requests, if it's not present in the latest version and you still believe we should implement it, please visit the URL of this bug (given at the top of this mail) and add a comment to that effect, giving more reproduction information if you have it.
