Crash Data

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20041107 Firefox/1.0
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20041107 Firefox/1.0

When visiting
>http://web.archive.org/web/20030618171538/http://geocities.com/msoubelle/conf_ancestors.html
< (note that the URL is malformed; everything between the ><'s should be
included) if you click on the link for "Tennessee"
< then FireFox closes all open windows and tabs, without prompting. No crash
info is normally generated, but during one trial it did crash--see Talkback
TB4346768X. Rebooting does not help, and if you copy/paste the second URL it
loads fine, so something about moving from the first page to the second is
causing the error. The bug manifests even with JavaScript turned off. I think
that a new window flashes open for just a moment (my first thought was the
JavaScript debug-console window), but it's not on screen long enough to be
certain of what it is.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Load the following URL (between the ><'s):
2. Scroll down (if needed) until you can see the link for "Tennessee"
3. Click on the link for "Tennessee"

Actual Results:
All FireFox windows close--even those with tabs--without prompting. The crash
handler does not trigger.

Expected Results:
A) Opened the selected link.
B) If the selected link tried to self-close (and I don't believe it's trying),
then FireFox should have prompted because of the other open tabs.

While trying to debug, during one trial out of at least 6) the crash handler
activated. The Talkback is TB4346768X.

Bug does not manifest when viewing the page on another machine with

That's referring to just the crash, not the all-windows-close behavior, right?

Reporter:

Can you install the most recent milestone build, or better yet a nightly from
within the last 3 days and try to reproduce using a clean profile created with
the profile manager from "firefox.exe" -p ?

Comment #6 was mistaken--the agent ID should have been:

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.7.6) Gecko/20050317
Firefox/1.0.2

Per your instructions, I removed FireFox 1.0.2 and installed the latest nightly
(Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.8b2) Gecko/20050405
Firefox/1.0+). I then created a new profile and visited the URL.

The bug still manifests, even with Java and Javascript turned off. But I'm
doing some new tests and finding that leaving the page causes FF to close,
regardless of how you leave: When I hit "back" on the 2050317 build, all windows
closed; when I went to the location bar and entered "www.google.com" on the
20050405 build, all windows closed.
I am still unable to reproduce. Perhaps there is some extenuating circumstance
on that system? I am not sure what would cause that behavior, but it probably
wouldn't be a bad idea to see firstly, what sort of 'hidden' software you have
installed (malware). And secondly, I have heard of security software that will
kill a process if it does something it considers 'malicious', which
/theoretically/ could mean opening multiple connections, so assuming multiple
tabs were open, it could detect your browsing as malicious behavior and be
zapping the process. So, I would check to make sure Firefox is whitelisted in
any security software you have running. I absolutely can't reproduce this using
Aviary nightly, Trunk nightly, or 1.0.2 milestone, so I am not sure what is
specific to your system that is causing it, but I don't believe it to be a
Firefox problem.
Ahh, and it would help if I read the fine comments (RTFC). It appears the
Talkback ID was related to the QuickTime Plugin. Have you uninstalled QuickTime
and updated to the latest version? That might solve your problem, if the crash
is related to that plugin. I have QuickTime installed on this system, but am
not experiencing the same problem, although I have the newest version (6.5.2).
Updating QuickTime had no effect:

* Updated the following QuickTime components from 6.5.x to 6.5.y (unable to
determine the last value, but QuickTime Updater said updates were available):
   - QuickTime Essentials
   - QuickTime Internet Extras
   - QuickTime Still Image
   - QuickTime Authoring

=> No effect: FireFox still closes without prompting or activating TalkBack.

* Uninstalled, rebooted, and re-installed with latest QT availble for download
(QT 6.5.2)
=> No effect: FireFox still closes without prompting or activating TalkBack.

I am at a loss for a solution to this problem, and I am still unable to
reproduce on 20050411. I am going to add the qawanted keyword to see if there
isn't somebody else that can reproduce this. In the meantime, can you give us
some information about your environment (hardware specs and operating system
version information). I'm on XP, but I have a win2k Pro computer nearby that I
can try to reproduce this on, but it would be helpful if I knew what version of
win2k you were actually running (I have access to all conceivable versions of it
through my school, so I can probably try and reproduce even if it's server or
something).

========================================

I don't have QT4 listed anywhere on my Start Menu or on my Add/Remove Programs list.

I did a search for npqtplugin2.dll and it came up with 9 matches in various
folders around the computer, with dates going from 6 months ago to 2000. I
renamed them all, but I didn't see any changes to the about:plugins list.

Am I correct in thinking that these lingering 4.x.x files are probably the cause
of the all-windows-close behavior somehow? Maybe FF is calling 4.x instead of
6.x? And how do I "de-register" the 4.x files from FF?

Sounds like a pretty fair assumption to me, but I really don't know. AFAIK,
there is no way to associate mimetypes with plugins in Firefox, I know you can
edit your download manager settings and associate them with outside programs to
be automatically opened/etc, but I don't know of any way to fix this as far as
plugins go.
This is an automated message, with ID "auto-resolve01".

This bug has had no comments for a long time. Statistically, we have found that
bug reports that have not been confirmed by a second user after three months are
highly unlikely to be the source of a fix to the code.

While your input is very important to us, our resources are limited and so we
are asking for your help in focussing our efforts. If you can still reproduce
this problem in the latest version of the product (see below for how to obtain a
copy) or, for feature requests, if it's not present in the latest version and
you still believe we should implement it, please visit the URL of this bug
(given at the top of this mail) and add a comment to that effect, giving more
reproduction information if you have it.

If it is not a problem any longer, you need take no action. If this bug is not
changed in any way in the next two weeks, it will be automatically resolved.
Thank you for your help in this matter.
