To reproduce:
1) compose new email.
2) type information into the body of the message.
3) type cntl-s (save to draft)

What happens: Cursor disappears. It does not reappear when typing.
What is expected: Cursor remains where it was before the save.
Workaround: Minimize and restore the window and the cursor is visible again.

T-Bird: version 1.0 (20041206)
This bug still exists in version 1.5.0.2
Well, I think I already said this. But because I wasn't already logged in, Bugzilla appears to have lost my comment. Now _there's_ a bug.

Back to the present. I have this same problem, not fixed by starting in safe mode. TBird v1.5.0.5, WinXP with all updates, Hyundai IT N91S in case that's relevant (but I think I recall this same bug with my Edsel monitor).
QA Contact: message-compose
And the bug _still_ exists in TBird 2.0.

Seems to be gone on the trunk, though, at least on OS X.

I do suffer of the cursor disappearing, but not with this scenario on Ubuntu Hardy Heron 08.04, Thunderbird version 2.0.0.18 (20081125). Its not clear what causes the cursor to disappears when this occurs to me. But that would be another bug report.
I thought this was fixed a couple months ago, but it's there now (back, or else it was never gone) under WinXP and Vista. TBird version 2.0.0.18.
I'm sorry to say that I occasionally get this bug too. Just got it now - on TBird 2.0.0.21, on WinXP.

Tried minimising/maximising the msg window ... no luck.

It's not related to installing a new extension - or even changing the config in any way. It can work fine all day, then just disappear for no obvious reason.
can you reproduce with beta?

This works for me, ala philor comment 5, using current trunk, both plain text and html
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9.1pre) Gecko/20090612 Shredder/3.0b3pre
Confirming, working in Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9.1pre) Gecko/20090610 Shredder/3.0b3pre, probably part of the new display code the landed a few weeks back.
