The rampant use of cookies, many of them nasty, calls for a better way to manage
cookies. That used by, e.g., AdSubract, whereby trusted cookies can be so marked
and the rest optionally discarded either periodically or whenever the browser is
closed, is very elegant.

Reproducible: Didn't try

Steps to Reproduce:
1.
2.
3.
Exceptions lets you do this. Set to keep cookies until you close Firefox, and
add the sites you want to allow persistent cookies into the Exceptions list.

More complex is extension fodder only.

That's not the way Tools/Cookies says Firefox works. Specifically, the
exceptions list is NOT cookies, but websites. There's no way that I can see to
specify which COOKIES to retain and which to dump on closing.

Anything over and above per-site settings isn't supported by the backend and
isn't going to be supported in the future.

WONTFIX means no, not "we already do this."
