I click on jpg attachments in forum threads a lot.  In IE, the image would
simply appear in a new window,  In Firefox, I get a dialog box which reads: "You
have chosen to open" and I have the choice to 'Open' or Save to disk.'  I leave
it at its default Open setting, and I have the 'Do this automatically for files
like this from now on' yet I have to click OK to get the image to open, i.e., it
does NOT open automatically.  Also, even though I do not have the 'Save to disk'
option chosen, it saves the jpg file to my hardrive at the specified location
for downloads.

Do I not have the right Plug-in?  How do I get it?

Steps to Reproduce:
1.  Go here, for example:
http://acapella.harmony-central.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=29
2. click on any thread with a paper clip icon
3. go to the thread and click on any attachment

Actual Results:  
I get what I describe nder Details

Expected Results:  
opened the image without a dialog box and without downloading the image file to
my hard drive

Provided a direct URL to a JPG.

The said JPGs are served with a HTTP header such as:

Content-disposition: atachment; filename=pedals.jpg

I think (after reading bug 53749) that given this header, the current behaviour
is correct. Try searching bugzilla for "Content-disposition" if you want lots of
information on the subject.
