When I update my thunderbird from 0.7.3 to 1.0 my mails disappear visualy

My settings, accounts etc. is ok, but already downloaded mails is missing. This could probably be fix with deleting my profile.. But I have very important emails that I do not what to loose.. Another thought is that I could export my mails and import then again aften upgrading, but there must be an easier way. Is this problem because the upgrading step is to large, I have tried to read some changelogs without any evidence on this hytophesis..
