This has been going on for a long time, but the other bugs that described this
issue morphed into other bugs. PLEASE DO NOT CHANGE THIS BUG.

The problem is that after you attach some files to a message and send it, all
subsequent messages you compose will fail to show any icons at all for
attachments. There is no way to verify that an attachment even exists for the
message. When attaching multiple files, this makes it impossible to tell which
you have attached already, and which you have not.

The files are actually attached, it's just that the compose window doesn't tell
you that.
