Details

I'm operating in a copy of Thunderbird 1.0 en-US that has been open for most
likely greater than 12 hours. I am using the group-by-sort view to show
expanded only my mail from Today and Yesterday. About 35 minutes ago "Today"
became "Yesterday". Sometime between then and now -- I think when a new message
just arrived with a timestamp of yesterday -- a second "Yesterday" showed up in
my group-by-sort view.

Now, two "Yesterday"s are present. Collapsing the top one (the one sorted as
latest?) doesn't collapse all of the mails "in it". Instead there are 50+
emails after the first Yesterday in the view and before the second Yesterday.

Collapsing the second Yesterday includes all of the emails between it and Last
Week. In this view, with the first and second Yesterdays collapsed, the 50+
emails still sit between the two of them, a part of neither grouping.

About the emails that sit between the Yesterdays:

  * (Now is 2005/03/22 00:40.)
  * The "oldest" email was sent 2005/03/21 at 00:01.
  * The "newest" email was sent 2005/03/21 at 06:42.

Expanding the "newer" Yesterday and examining the oldest message that was
grouped under it when this Yesterday was collapsed (that is, the message that is
above and "newer than" the newest email that occurs between the Yesterdays), I
find that its date is 2005/03/20 at 00:00. The newest email grouped in the
first Yesterday has a date of 2005/03/21 23:36.

Ugh. Just trying to describe this bug gives me a headache. No telling what
it'll do to the person who tries to find it. I'm going back to signing release
files! :)

Apologies for the ambiguous summary. I figure when the problem is better
understood the summary can be made more specific. Until then, better to log the
problem somewhere.
To follow-up: shutting down Thunderbird, waiting for it to unload, then
restarting it leads to correct behaviour in the group-by-sort feature.
