This causes problems with some IMAP servers, that doesn't support this. But if the setting is left off by default, the users of these servers won't have any problems, and the users of the servers, which support this, won't have problems either. This does, in my experience, present a significant problem to new users and to users without technical knowhow or desire/courage to modify settings. Therefore, my suggestion is to change the default setting to off, to maximize compatibillity.
