RESOLVED DUPLICATE of bug 11076

People

(Reporter: michael.graubart7, Assigned: sspitzer)

Details

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; en-US; rv:1.8b2) Gecko/20050326
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; en-US; rv:1.8b2) Gecko/20050326

If a received e-mail is saved to disk as the default file-type,(i.e. .eml), it
cannot be opened subsequently by double-clicking, as used to be the case with
much earlier versions of Mozilla (e.g. the versions for Mac OS 9.x). It can only
be opened by starting Mozilla -> File -> Open file…

If the e-mail is saved as .html, double-clicking will open it.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Save a received e-mail (File -> Save) to desktop without altering the default
file-type selection of .eml.
2. Double-click on the saved file (regardless of whether Mozilla is running or not).

Actual Results:
A window showing the contents of the desktop opens, but the e-mail file does not
open (and, if Mozilla is not initially running, it does not start).

Expected Results:
The e-mal file should have opened in Mozilla.

eMac G4, OS 10.3.8. Classic style.

Please don't reopen before telling why you want it reopened [it saves a whole
lot of people some unnecessary e-mail ;)]

The reason that it's still not working for you is that the bug i duped yours to
is not yet fixed. Duping only means "reported before". It doesn't necessarily
mean that it's fixed.

Duping again.

Bug 11076 discusses 3 separate things and has remained open for 6 years.
Probably difficult to solve.

The problem mentioned in this bug also occurs in Windows and there it can be
solved quite easily: right-click, select "open with...", select Mozilla as the
application and tick the "always use this.." checkmark.

I think this particular bug can be solved by adding an extra checkmark under
"edit->preferences->advanced->system" to have Mozilla open .eml files.
That should not be too difficult.
Rob, I'm amazed that you say that the original bug has been open for 6 years;
perhaps my bug is not, after all, an exact duplicate. I used Mozilla on my old
Mac G3 with OS 9.2.2, regularly downloading new builds and frequently reporting
bugs; and when Mozilla for Classic disappeared, I used Mozilla 1.3.1 in WamCom's
OS 9.x version until December 2004 — until I got my new eMac and started using
OS 10.3.x (currently 10.3.8). And (unless I am losing my memory totally) I was
always able to save e-mails as .eml and re-open them by double-clicking until I
graduated to OS X and the newer Mozillas.
