User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.6) Gecko/20050317 Firefox/1.0.2 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.6) Gecko/20050317 Firefox/1.0.2 Currently it seems that opening a new separate main window is impossible. Even launching Thunderbird again leads to the existing main window, not to opening a new one. Contrary to Mozilla Suite, where you can right-click on the status bar icon, choose "Mail and Newsgroups" and have a new main mail window opened. However, when you get a new mail notification while reading a long news message, it is very likely that you want the existing window unchanged and a new one opened for checking the new mail, instead of going to the Inbox in the same window and having to go back where you were. It is quite disappointing the way it is, especially for those with a Mozilla Suite background. I find that Ctrl-N does the same thing as Ctrl-M (New Message), though Ctrl-N is not listed anywhere in the menu. Therefore, we could use Ctrl-N for New Window. (I'm aware that some people want Ctrl-N to open a new browser window, so we'd probably have to reach an agreement on the shortcut key.) Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce:

Right-click on the Inbox and select "Open in New Mail Window".
