Firefox creates a new bookmark file every time I start it.
I just deleted over 100 bookmark files stored i my profile folder.

Reproducible: Always

Yes. I first discovered the bug using 1.0.2. I don't know if it was there
earlier, but I think so.

Please check your permissions on files in the profile folder, specifically
bookmarks.html. Looks like other similar reports are for read-only bookmarks.html

Permissions are OK: Owner: Me ; Permissions: Read and write

This is happening with Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.1 and Firefox 1.04 as well... very
annoying.

10.4.2, just repaired permissions. This behavior remains, I get multiple
bookmarks file everytime I open the Bookmark Manager. Made a mention on bug
271883 as well.

Repairing permissions won't help, that resets permissions on installed files
(mainly system files) to what they should be.

This Report should be closed as a Dup of Bug 271883 "Multiple bookmark.html
files being generated". It is not just bookmarks.html; bookmarks.bak needs 
to be writable as well

Possibly the occurrence on the Tiger platform (which I have seen) needs to be
in in own Bug, but that can be discussed elsewhere.
