There are two reasons for this: 1. It duplicates the interface for changing tabs that Safari uses making it easier for people to switch. 2. On laptops (like my iBook), the Alt (or option) key is only on one side of the keyboard necessitating the use of both hands to switch which tab is in view. By switching to Shift+Apple+[left/right arrow] tabs can be switched using one hand. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce:
Bug 162107 comment 30 has a patch but it makes it impossible to change tabs from a text field. In 10.3 you can change the shortcuts for Camino yourself with System Preferences.

Interesting bug there (#162107). I'm not convinced, though, that it's people switching from Mozilla (or Firefox these days) that Camino should be targeting. I think it's people who are switching from Safari. I, for one, have switched to Camino from Safari on my iBook G3 600Mhz because Safari got to be too slow. Firefox is also too slow. Camino, in contrast, has very good performance. Being consistent with the dominant browser (like it or not) on OS X would be a good thing and it would make the migration easier. I see the arguments, btw, that Cmd-Shift-[left/right arrow] already implements select to beginning/end. I still maintain, though, that being the same as Safari (which has changed this behavior to switch tabs) would be better from the standpoint of getting people to switch. In addition, Alt-Cmd-[left/right arrow] is awkward in that you must use two hands to switch tabs. By switching to Cmd-Shift-[left/right arrow] you can accomplish tab switching using only the right hand (or you can still use both hands if you wish). Comment #2 mentions you can change this using the system preferences in 10.3. How would one go about doing this? I tried adding it into the keyboard shortcuts preference, but it doesn't seem to have taken. I wonder if I need to restart Camino?

In regards to the question I asked in Comment #3 (incorrectly referencing comment #2 when I meant to reference comment #1), yes, all that was needed was to restart Camino. Because the keyboard shortcuts can be changed so easily, I'll go ahead and close this bug as Invalid. I still think, though, that this would be a better default so we don't confuse Safari users that might switch.
