there is a strange duplicity in tthe newsgroups message listing - both the
'speech bubble' and the little plus/minus sign collapse the message threads.
they do the same, and they reside an inch apart. am I missing something?

the only difference I can tell is that the 'speech bubble' control only expands,
and does not collapse back, the message thread. but this seems more like a bug
(whether or not the duplicity is acceptible) than a reason to have two controls
do basically the same thing.

the plus/minus sign seems more intuitive and standard for this action, but any
will do. the interface should be simplified if there's no additional gain in the
current design.

Reproducible: Always
Selecting the speech bubble also selects the entire thread; clicking the Expand
widget doesn't change the selection at all. Further, there is a request asking
for Expand widgets at every branch point (allowing subthreads to be collapsed).

I agree that the icon in the thread column isn't all that functional; but if you
don't care for the thread column, you can hide it. (Column selector is the
little button above the scrollbar.)
